Essex / Re: Need advice - South Family Essex
« on: Friday 01 October 10 13:55 BST (UK)  »
I am convinced that James South b 1817 and William James b 1826 are brothers as William is the witness on James Marriage and the same on Williams marriage.

I have not been able to find a baptism for Elizabeth at all in any nearby parishes at the time she is said to be born according to the census.

Elizabeth is widowed by 1837 from Daniel I have his death certificate and then working as a housekeeper with the 2 youngest children by 1841 census. She ends up marrying 2 more times - I have both of these certificates.

Essex / Need advice - South Family Essex
« on: Friday 01 October 10 01:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am not sure where to put this question it involves an Essex Family but also sort of a military question.

I was recently in England and visited the Essex Record Office to do some hands on research. I only had 5 hours at the library and did not have time to sort my information out there just wrote everything down everytime I saw the South surname. I found out some interesting information and do not know if I can run with a hunch - or if I should wait to be proven beyond a doubt.

I found Daniel South married Elizabeth South in 1816 in Birch Essex ( I believe them to be first cousins. Daniels father being James and Elizabeths father being Daniel - who I think were brothers children of James and Mary - but that is another theory and another question for later)

Daniel and Elizabeth have 7 children that I know about.
James born 1817
Mary Ann 1821
Daniel 1823 died 12 weeks old
William James 1826
Elizabeth Frances 1831
Sarah1833
Daniel 1836

Here is where I need help I found a record for a Daniel South born abt 1797 who joins the 21st Regiment of Foot on 12 Aug 1817 at age 20. His records show that he was discharged on 2 Aug 1830. My problem is that he served in West Indies from 24 Apr 1918 - 28 Feb 1827. That would mean 3 children Mary Ann, Daniel and William James are not his and I found the baptism records that say for Mary and William baptised by mother Elizabeth South spinster.

Is this enough evidence to say that my 3 x great grandfather William James was most likely illigimate. On his police pension papers he records his father and mother as Elizabeth and Daniel.

Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks
Jackie

Thank you kob3203 and fanningadm

you have both given me a few things to think about and look up.
I looked into a professional researcher once and they quoted me about $800 Australian dollars. Which was far more than i can afford on my part time wage.

There is also a genealogy centre in Tipperary that has access to parish records but they are only open on certain days and did not respond to an email I sent. I should try emailing them again.

My Fannings were Catholic.

thank you

Hi Cathy
I will not be any help to the project until I can go back one more generation. My great great grandfather James fanning married Eliza Lynch in 1869 they only had one son who died age 2. I believe James was born in 1850. His fathers name was james Fanning also I think from the marriage record.

And that is where I am stuck! I have no idea where James was born and if it was actually 1850 or before it. I need to get hold of the Parish records if they exist and see if that was where he was born in Tipperary.

If I ever manage to get back one more generation then i can move forward to find a living descendant.

regards

Jackie

Hi
I am from a family of girls - one of 5 sisters. My mum has one brother left in England that I might be able to approach. I live in Australia so it will be via mail that i contact him so it might take a while.

His grandmother was a Fanning born in Tipperary Town, Tipperary in 1882. Eliza was from a family of 6 - 5 of them girls. The only son died at the age of 2 from measels. It has been difficult tracking them all down. But 3 of the girls ended up in England before WW1.

No I haven't had my DNA done. I thought it had to be a male relative that did DNA. My family is 5 girls. I would have to contact a cousin in England to get it done on my behalf.

Do you know if it is male or female DNA for the test.

Thank you Jenn

The phone number you gave me was the fax number  ::) I googled the correct number and was given the burial dates. They also gave me the numbers for the local newspapers - so if i do not have any luck with a burial notice in the archives again for names of living children - then I will put an add in the local newspaper for local relatives.

thanks for your tips and help
regards
Jackie

Hi
I am looking for someone who lives near or in Ipswich that can look up two headstones for me. I need to find out a more accurate date of death. I spent 4 hours looking through a whole year of Brisbane courier newspapers today on microfiche looking for a funeral notice without any luck. I am hoping with a correct date of death I might find something in the correct newspaper that I might of missed the first time.

Ultimately I am trying to find living relatives.

Patrick N Warwick died 1965 age 59 ref 4.0142
Lily E Warwick died 1969 age 61 ref 4.0142

I found these references on an Ipswich General Cemetery Headstones Index on Microfiche

Patrick Noel Warwick marred Lily Ellen Augustine in 1929.
In the 1936 electoral rolls they were at Murgon Queensland and had moved to Ipswich by the 1949 electoral roll.

thanks for any help
Jackie

COMPLETED
I rang the Ipswich City Council and they gave me the burial dates and the phone numbers for the local newspapers. I am going to place an add for family members in the local newspapers and see if i have any luck.

thanks
