Norfolk / Re: St Michael at Thorn Parish Records
« on: Wednesday 07 November 12 18:31 GMT (UK)  »
Unfortunately the registers for St Michael-at-Thorn appear to have been destroyed, along with the church, in one of the 1942 bombing raids on Norwich. It also appears that the ATs/BTs are in very poor condition, making accurate transcription almost impossible.

From the Devon and Exeter Gazette, Friday 11th July 1930:-

A series of ingenious frauds worked through the advertisement columns of a periodical was disclosed at the petty sessions, when Charles Richard Eastoe, of no fixed abode, was charged with obtaining by false pretences 22s from William Rowe, Pontypridd; 20s from Frank Willis, of Cheltenham; and 33s 6d from John Henry Sanders, of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, all about May 15th. Eastoe pleaded guilty to each charge, and also asked that 16 other similar cases in various parts of the country be taken into account. He was sent to prison for four months, with hard labour, on each charge – 12 months in all.

Another possible suggestion, even if he was literate, is bureaucracy. If he was owed money on discharge then if the paperwork said his surname was Copperwhite, officialdom being what it is, they couldn't possibly pay someone named Copperwheat.

Mind you, if he owed them money I'm sure they could make the necessary correction.

Regarding the spelling of surnames over the centuries

If it looks Rite and sounds Write it either is Wright, or could be Right.

Norfolk / Re: Who was my grandad in Diss
« on: Saturday 01 September 12 11:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi Dissman. With only a nickname to go on I don't know if we've had previous correspondence on this family, but I have extensive information of Olive's ancestors if you're interested.

I can be contacted at (*).

So far as the comments about rumour, gossip and guesswork are concerned I believe all can and sometimes should, be used in writing up a family history, so long as it is done in a proper manner, with the appropriate disclaimers.

For example

It has been suggested, by certain family members, that *** was the child's father, but absolutely no evidence has been found to corroborate this story,

or, and this comes from research into a friend's family,

Although it has been claimed, by some relatives, that *** was the father of her second child, it has been proven that this is untrue. Military records have shown that the man alleged to have been the father was overseas with the armed forces for over four years, only returning to England seven months after the birth of the child. Other evidence shows that the mother never left England.

By including this type of information you give possible clues to future researchers, without making any untrue claims, and if you have shown that an allegation is untrue then you may save another researcher from wasting time, as well as absolving an innocent person of responsibility.

Regards

Bill

Norfolk / Re: Possiibilty of publishing an aide to Norfolk research
« on: Saturday 01 September 12 10:26 BST (UK)  »
Some of these volumes are now available online as downloadable pfd files, courtesy of Google Books.

http://archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22Norfolk+%28England%29+--+Description+and+travel%22

There appears to be an error with the link to volume 3.

I do have pdf copies of volumes 2-10 (including the proper vol 3), but all too large to upload. I can, however, transfer them to anyone who has a 'dropbox' account.

It's free, and good for larger files.

Anyone interested can contact at (*), or on my Norfolk Ancestors facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/302690316491551/
