Thank you Neale, that does look like her census based on the children's names and husbands occupation.

I am confused as to how her age can be so variable thought - this 1851 census would have her born about 1810, her death certificate would have her born around 1830, and all the other census' are somewhere in between!

It's the first time i'm come across so much variation - based on her death certificate she'd have been about 16 at her marriage, but based on the census dates she could have been as old as 35. I've only found one birth record for a child of Alexander Campbell and Margaret McDonald in Inverness, and that's for a jean Campbell in 1817.

I purchased the record - you are correct  :)

Ellen McRae, widow of Donald McRae. Death registered by her grandson Hugh McIndewer.

Her parents were Alexander Campbell and Mary McDonald.

Thank you for your help, the odd date/location would have been enough to put me off buying the record if I hadn't been prompted.

I haven't ruled it out with any certainty, the date is of course later than any suggestion from the census' (varied as they are). But birth record for this Ellen McRae (nee McDonald) is Latheron, up in Caithness - which goes against every bit of info I have that places her birth in the Inverness region.

Hello all,

I've got a bit of a loose end with  one of my ancestors. I have her marriage record and census records from 1861 to 1901, but I cannot for the life of me find her birth or death records. I believe she died between 1901 and 1911, as she is no longer on the family census. In 1901 the family lived in Dumbarton, and in 1911 the family lived in Old Kilpatrick (Clydebank).

I've searched for every variation of ELLEN/HELLEN/HELEN/BELL with every variation of MCRAE/MACRAE/MCCRAE/MCKAY/MACKAE.

Full details below:

1911 Census
Ellen McRae's unmarried son John McRae lives with his widowed sister-in-law Mary McIndewar (nee. McRae).

Any help appreciated, pulling my hair out trying to find her!

Hi all, I do think Heille looks like the place name and not a surname. I've attached a larger portion of the marriage register.

Margaret died after 1855 and as such has more information on her death certificate, which states her parents as James McLean and Grace McLean (nee. McLean).

Hi Anna, I have Margaret's death certificate, both her father and her mother were McLeans (her mother's maiden name is also listed as McLean).

Monica - thank you! This seems very likely and is very interesting. The records i've been finding from my Skye family seem to be better than most at including place names (including croft names) so next time i'm in the area i'll have to have a wee wander.

Debra - thank you for this - the family name is definitely McRae/MacRae, but I will expand my search to include MacKae as i've not been looking at any of them :) . Ancestry.com suggests Angus is indeed a son, but judging by your findings the surname would have to have been misreported as MacNeil rather than McLean.

Thanks all for your help, it's proven very valuable  :)

The couple is Alexander Macrae and Margaret McLean (although her surname is not listed). Instead, there's this word at the end of the record - Heille?

Can I get a consensus on this, and does anyone know what this might mean?

This couple had at least one son in 1803, so I guess it's fairly unusual to have such a long wait until they were married. They lived in Bracadale on the Isle of Skye.

I do - this looks likely, his address at the time of his death is on other records i've found.

Mary Jane died in 1863, James Mitchell remarried in 1864 (to Agnes King) and then died in January 1871.
