The Common Room / How reliable are death certificates ??
« on: Friday 26 March 04 21:02 GMT (UK)  »
I have posted here before regarding the confussion surrounding my Grandmothers personal history.

She was born in 1879 I believe as a Brown. And then I think married a Bonner then an Alfred Morris Smith. Alfred died in 1911. My father was born in 1923 but there is no father listed on the birth certificate. His mothers details are Smith formaly Brown. I have obtained her death, certificate, she died in 1959, which says she was a widow of Edward Smith ???.

Now where on earth he has come from I have no idea. There has always been confussion in the family about how many times she was married but no one living can shed any light on the subject. Could the registrar simply have recorded the name wrong?

My father did have one  brother a year older than him and I am nearly ready to order his birth certificate. I just need to check some more facts. Maybe that will answer the question.

I find it hard to believe that she wouldnt have married again after Alfreds death so maybe Edward was my paternal Grandfather. If he was why wasnt he recorded on the birth certificate????

Ive confirmed a couple of things.

Annie Louisa was born a Brown (1879)  then married a Bonner then a Smith. I have no idea when she married first and became a Bonner.

She married Alfred Morris Fredrick Smith but I cant confirm that date either. I believe it could have been as early as 1901 in the London/Surrey area.

I have Annies death certificate on the way, she died in Portsmouth in  1959 so hopefully from that I may find the DOB.

Thanks for your help

Family History Beginners Board / Is formerly same as maiden?
« on: Tuesday 24 February 04 21:18 GMT (UK)  »
I was double checking something on 1837online in relation to my fathers birth. I found the record and noted that the mothers maiden name was Brown. On his birth certificate it says that his mother was formerly Bonner.

Now there is not much of a chance that they can be different people.

On 1837online its listed as
Year Oct Nov Dec 1923. Name Lionel B. Mothers maiden name Brown. District Petersfield.

On the birth certificate its exactly the same apart from the mother being known formerly, not maiden name as Bonner.

Could formerly mean she was married twice?

I have my fathers birth certificate with the fathers name on it left blank. He was born in 1923.(Lionel Bonner Smith). The youngest of upto thirteen siblings.

His mother mother died in November 1959.(Annie Louise Smith. Maiden name Bonner)
I know from speaking to some cousins that the father of some of his siblings was named Alfred Morris Frederick Smith and he died in June 1918. The family home was the same for all siblings.
Now Im wondering if there is any way that I can find out who else was living at this address around 1922/1923?

What Im hoping for is that my fathers father may have been living there but as he wasnt married to Annie that his name wasnt recorded on Lionels birth certificate.

Bit of a long shot I know but none of my fathers brothers or sisters are still alive so I have nowhere else to go with my research.

There does seem to be a lot of conflicts in the info I have. Annie was 80 when she died making her 44 when my father was born. Alfred was 61 when he died in 1918 so a lot older that Annie when they married.

Im beginning to wonder if one of my fathers "sisters" was actually his mother ???

I have obtained my Aunts marriage certificate from 1931. On it both her father (my grandfather) and her husbands father are listed with their trades and also as Journeyman. What does this mean ?

JDG.
I have no idea. As I said I believe my mother got things round the wrong way with the second marriage. Its just a hunch that I have. I spoke to her earlier and she believed that Annie Louise, my fathers mother was a Bonner then Brown then Smith. Smith being my surname. However on the birth certificate it says Bonner (Maiden) and the Mothers name as Annie Louise Smith so I deduce from that that she was a Brown in her second marriage.
