John's Will arrived this week - but nothing exciting to tell ! He leaves it all to his wife but if she dies or remarries, it is to be passed to her 4 children.  No mention of Walter Carr.

I note the Lancashire records Office are currently working on School Admission Registers for the next few weeks so I think the next plan of attack will be the obituary sections of the Ormskirk Advertiser at Ormskirk Library or preferably LRO if they have copies.

Wondering about the marriage of Eliza Carr & Walter Fletcher in Ulverston that someone suggested but will hold off for now until assessed obituaries.

I've ordered John Andrews' Will this week.  So it will be interesting to see if he makes any reference to Walter Carr in it !

HI guys ! Interesting that Shaun used to live near Giddy Gate ! Yep you spotted that I managed to get hold of Jane 's Will.  I hadn't spotted that John Andrews had left a Will though ! That might be an interesting one for me to obtain ! As he had moved away from his family and lived with the Manchester family (presumably besotted with Jane !!) ,he had no children that we are aware of so I wonder who he left his Will to ?? I will order that during lunch at work tomorrow if possible.

The book that you refer to , I wonder if that is a bit late as its 19th century ? I will have a mooch !

Others have suggested that Richard seems to be the one that is certain of the birth place of Walter being Cartmel so I'm going to stick with that too !

A few years ago, I had the people at Southport do a search for Walter's birth certificate.  They searched the 2 years before and after and found nothing.  Early last year, I ordered a birth certificate for a Walter Carr that would have been about 12years but that wasn't him either.

I had a look through the Directory for Lancashire Records Office in the guardian Minutes but didn't come up with anything interesting.

There was a school called Melling R.C School - Cunscough, Shaun - do you know the names of other possible schools for Melling scholars ?

hi,

I didn't follow up on Joseph & Abigail last year as I didn't do much family tree  last year. If they are linked with Walter Carr I may re-address later but don't plan to go off at a tangent.

It is the employee of John Andrews that I am looking for rather than who was employing John.

Hello there,  I can relate to the information from the 1871 Census that shows John as a Saddler apprentice himself at age 13. He obviously succeeded in his apprenticeship, became a Saddler and then took on his own employee.

So the first question I am focussing on as I start again with my quest is, whether I can find out who this employee of John's was and if so, how ? What type of records do I need to be trying to find ?

Hello again everybody !

Lancashire Records Office have told me this week they can't find any apprentice records under the name 'Walter Carr'.

So, what I now want to do is to try to find out the name of the boy employed by John Andrews on the 1881 census. John Andrews was the boarder living with the Manchester Family living in Melling and trading as a Sadler .

Is this possible ? Are there records of who was employed by whom in 1881 ?

On Walter's Marriage certificate to Jane Riding, his father is named as John Carr (deceased).  This still doesn't help me with his mother.

Is it possible for me to find out exactly who John Andrews was employing on the 1881 census ? Although I have been told that it should not be Walter Carr due to his age, I could do with trying to rule this out !

I have also read that if a child was born out of wedlock, he would take on the mothers surname and then if the parents did get married, he would take on the father's surname.  So if 'whoever' went to Cartmel to give birth to Walter..he could be under a different surname initially !!! ...what a headache !!!
