Many thanks...I've heard of an 'American Wake' and a 'bottling' is a new one on me,but I've found what I was looking for...it's called a 'Convoy' in Donegal!

Does anyone know what the party held on the night before someone emigrated called in Donegal? I believe it had a name which I have been told in the past but have now forgotten!

Thanks,
Carol.

Hello David,

I am so sorry it has taken me so long to reply to you, many apologies!

The short answer is no, I never did find out any more about Mary. I went to the Archives in Taunton but didnt find anything more.

I think if you reply to this you will have posted twice and so can send me a PM (personal message) and then I will send you anything I have on Mary. She was certainly an interesting lady, but as you say, nearly all the information available is about her life in Australia as a 'First Fleeter' convict.

Best wishes,
Carol

Dear MaxD'

Thank you so much for all your effort on my behalf and for locating the TA Reg 207. It looks like our soldier was, as I suspected, in the TA prior to joining the Royal Artillery. It enables us to put another piece of the jigsaw into place, building up a picture of his life.

Many thanks, also, to your 'expert from another place'.

Regards,
Carol

Hi MaxD

Many thanks for your reply. I cant see anything that is related to that entry, except it is dated the day before the soldier enlisted in the Royal Artillery, when he would have been age 16. We suspect he lied about his age! I have looked at other soldier's records on the adjacent pages and a few have the code 207 although most have the code 204 which seems to relate to discharges.

If you do come across this code perhaps you could let me know? I have 'Googled' it to no avail!

Many thanks again,

Carol

Could anyone tell me what the following means on a military record from 1935 please:

5/3/35 Para 207 TAR. The soldier enlisted in the Royal Artillery on 6/3/1935.

Many thanks,

Carol

Hi Maddy,
Sorry for the late reply. Many thanks for offering to look at the papers but someone has already done those for me and didn't find anything. I think there was a lot of coming and going between Devon and Cornwall! I guess next stop will be the archives in Truro.
Many thanks again for all your help.

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, I think my 8 year old would fit in quite nicely!

It's a great photo!

Many thanks again,
Carol.

Devon / Okehampton Boys School (Board School)

I was wondering if anyone knows the age range of the pupils at Okehampton Boys (Board) School. Is it possible that an 8 year old could have been attending....did it have a Junior School? I have found a record in the punishment book :( that is of interest to me but no indication of the age of the child. I see it merged with the Girls School in 1925 to become the Senior Mixed School which makes me question my 8 year old.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Carol
