London and Middlesex / Cripplegate Workhouse
« on: Thursday 03 February 22 00:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am currently involved in a research project for English Heritage regarding the Workhouse in Framlingham Castle Suffolk.  I am researching a family who spent a short time there in 1831. In the 1941 Census it would appear that they have moved to London and are in Cripplegate workhouse.  Would anyone be able to tell me if I could any records of residents in the 1830/40’s please?

Wow!  Thanks so much for all your hard work!  Sorry but first schoolboy error was that the marriage certificate said he was a bachelor.   I am confined to bed so had to get my husband to get the certificates out.  I supposed I thought it was unusual for someone to marry for the first time at 41.  If that is the case what is the reason?   If this is actually the case where was he in 1871?

I am sorry so many of you worked so hard for me when it looks that he wasn't married twice?

Lancashire / James Williams

Can any one help with my research please.  My Great Grandfather is James Williams born in 1839 Stockport Cheshire.

In 1841 he lived in Edward St Stockport
In 1851 he lived in Allcocks Buildings Heaton Norris
In 1861 he was a lodger aged 22 in Manchester St Andrew (no address I could find)

In 1880 he married Sarah Whitehead when James was 41 and Sarah was 22
In 1881 he lived 29 Heaton Street Denton
In 1891 he lived in 17 Joseph Street Denton
In 1896 he died in 10 Belgrave Street Denton

My query is where was he in 1871 and was he married before?  I can find no marriage certificate prior to his marriage to Sarah.  This was a civil wedding.

There is a record for 1871 for a James Williams born in Stockport in 1837 and his wife is named as Hannah Sykes.  There is a Robert Williams listed aged 9 but in later years these child showed up in no records for James only his children with Sarah.  Is this my James Williams?  If so where is the record of marriage, death of Hannah, where is the child?  it would be easy to use this info but I have nothing to verify this?

Can anyone help or guide me into where else to look.  I have checked ancestry, Cheshire BMD and not sure where to look next.

Very interesting info.  I guess we will never know for sure. I get stuck in tracing my line going forward from the1911 census.  Could you tell me how you are able to find so much info from that date please?

What you have said is all that I have thought although I do have that extra little piece of information.  The P as on her birth certificate is Pettit.  I too thought it may have referenced the father.  I wish I had known that she was "adopted" when they were still alive as they were in my lifetime then perhaps we would know more.  I didn't realise that she had been until at a wedding in the 80's I asked my uncle where all her family were and he told me se had been adopted.  I don't think Elsie died until 1982 which until I started my search the family were unaware of.

We always leave it too late to ask the question?

I too found that she worked for a Mrs Plant in 1911.  I have been researching today to see if there was a Pettit in the local area at the right time.  The only one I found was quite strange.  A Rupert Pettit was named on the 1911 census as Ruby and was a son!  It was also noted on the original census document that this was correct!  He was from Stowmarket.

I wonder?

Hi Trish and suffolk Sue and Annette
The Ruby A Fisk who married my grandfather George Johnson is my paternal grandmother.  She was brought up by another family. I don't know if she was adopted or just "given away".  My mystery is that The family don't know who Ruby's father was and I fear given the possible circumstances the information will have been buried and may be impossible to find.  Elsie married Alexander Anderson and had 2 children who would have been her half sisters.  Maybe the information lies within that family.  I am not sure how I can progress or if this is an impossible task.

Yes I made a mistake and I have already been told before.  I consider myself thoroughly chastised and it wont happen again.

Suffolk / Searching for KEEBLE relative?
« on: Thursday 21 October 10 22:18 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for Brian Derek Keeble who was born in Aldringham Suffolk.  His father was Derick Keeble who died in 1942. His mother was Frances Edna Read.  I believe that Frances married again after her first husbands death in WW2.

His grandfather was George Keeble who was born in Letheringham in 1890.  George Keeble was my great Uncle.  I am in contact with his cousin Jennifer in USA whose Mother was Muriel Keeble, Brians Aunt.  If anyone has any ideas how I can track down Brian, I would be very grateful.
