I know I'm rather late to this party, but I'm very interested in James Blackstock Thompson (b. 1879) to James Thompson and Jane Blackstock. James Blackstock was the first minister of the church I am now the minister of, near Swansea. I'd love to find out more about his religious life, and what happened to him after he emigrated to Canada. I've been able to track his son, James Kennedy Ross Thompson through the records, but not him. Please get in touch if you think you can help (or if you'd like more information from me).

Thanks, Roy. There are no other baptisms in the parish with John Clark(e) as a father, and no marriages in Sussex between a John Clark and Mary (the parents of John Clarke are John Clarke and Mary according to the transcript). There is, however, a marriage between Thomas Clarke and Mary, and four baptisms of children of Thomas Clarke and Mary between 1763, 1764, 1766, and 1772, leaving (as you can see) a nice gap for John in 1769. All of this is what made me ask in the first place.

Interestingly, there's also a William Clark that's apparently a son of William Clark and Mary in 1767, which also doesn't fit (again there's no marriage), so I wonder whether either the transcriber or the priest (or even the parents) made the same error on both occasions, putting the son's name into the father's column. It would be nice to know what the original said, though.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Oving Lookup Request (exact date known)

I'm looking for someone who has access to a fiche of the Oving parish records for 1769 (not a transcript).

John Clark was baptised on 10 December 1769, and I need to know his parents names. The transcript from PRTS and SFHG transcripts say his father was John Clark, but that doesn't seem to fit. I'm hoping it's a transcription error and his father was actually Thomas Clark.

I'd be very grateful if someone could confirm that one way or the other.

Thanks in advance.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Eastbourne Parish Lookup, please (I know the exact date)
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 01:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for someone to check the original register for Eastbourne St. Mary for me, please. It's the marriage between Margery Frankwell and Mr Sinnock on 11 Oct 1649.

The Sussex Family History Group transcript have the groom's forename as Charles. Family Search has Chas. But I'm rather hoping that both are transcription errors and it's actually Elias.

Is there any chance someone could take a look for me next time they're in the Record Office? Thanks in advance.

PS - When looking at the 17th century baptism records for Hailsham, I came across the most uniquely and appropriately named child I've ever seen! Anyone like to take a guess??? I'll give you a clue: she was the baseborn daughter of Anne Clever.

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Banbury Baptism Lookup, please

Debbie,

Thanks for trying! I've found 'my' Sarah Cowper on the 1851 through 1881 census (by which time she is Sarah Mabbs). You can see all the details here, if you like.

Based on those censuses, it's possible that in 1841 she might be one of:
Sarah Tee (b. approx 1816), at Church Street Rectory House, Hackney
Sarah Cowper (b. approx 1811 in Oxfordshire) at Wardington, Lower End, Cropredy, Wardington, Oxfordshire (ruled out by your 1851 find)
Sarah Cowper (b. approx 1811) at Ludgate Street, St Martin Ludgate, London

So here's my theory: The family you've found of Elizabeth Cowper is the right family, but the 1805 Sarah died, and Richard and Mary had another Sarah in another parish sometime between 1808 and 1816. There is some evidence for this: Ancestry lists in its Banbury parish records the death of Sarah Cooper, daughter of Richard, butcher on 26 October 1809 (unfortunately it doesn't list baptisms for the same period).

So thanks for your work - at least I have a reasonable theory to test in the records.

Thanks for looking. Cooper is always a possible alternative.

According to the 1851, 1871 and 1881 censuses she was born 1813-1814. The 1861 census would have her at 1822, however. I've always assumed the later date is an error. The 1841 census has a Sarah Cowper born approx 1811 in Banbury, Oxfordshire, so that fits with the earlier date, and her second marriage was in 1845, so that too fits the early date hypothesis.

But I've also noticed a Sarah Cowper born approx 1826 in the parish of Aston Le Walls, Northamptonshire, but still in the registration district of Banbury. That's a very long shot given everything I've said, but I might have to try it if we don't come up with anything in Banbury proper.

FreeBMD has the marriage of a Sarah Anne Cowper in Banbury in 1847, but she can't be mine. So it does look as there might be two Sarah Cowpers born around that time. Funny we can't find either of them!
