Re the Tippers in Rogate. I am descended from James Tipper (1782). His son John (my great great)was transported to Van Diemans Land in 1844 for stealing bacon from Col Wyndham, who I believe lived in the grand Petworth House (National Trust porperty). I am going to visit and maybe I'll see the kitchen whence the famous bacon was stolen! I can't locate the actual birth record for John Tipper c 1817, but his marriage indicated his father was James a carpenter, and his convict papers indicated native place as "West Petersfield, Sussex". I found baptisms of other boys to James Tipper the carpenter in Rogate, so unless there was another James Tipper carpenter very close by I am pretty certain James is my ancestor. Fyning Lane is in North Rogate. Perhaps TN15 can help me with why Fyning might be linked to the Tippers as I've not seen anything on this, and would love to find out before I visit in April. John's father James had died by the 1841 Census. I think his mother remarried. His eldest brother also a James was also transported in 1843 (and was a soldier at Tower of London in 1841) and the younger brothers were also living away from Rogate, so I really have no clues about which area in Rogate they lived except for them being recorded in the Rogate parish register transcripts.
