Thanks to all for info and advice.  Starting out in genealogy is sometimes confusing and frustrating, so all of your helpful hints will be used and are greatly appreciated.

Dumfriesshire / 1861 Census Look-up Please
« on: Friday 09 March 07 22:07 GMT (UK)  »
If someone would be so kind - I am looking for information on William and Elizabeth Bryden and son William Bryden who would appear as a 3 yr old in the 1861 census.  There may also be a brother Robert.
Unrelated but important - is it better to subscribe to Scotlands People or Ancestry.com to research Scottish BMD and census documents?  I don't have enough money for both, so I would like to get the best value for my money.
Many thanks

Many thanks to both Gadget and Mike for their replies.  I am awaiting some info from a distant Bryden relative and hope to be able to confirm that the information matches.

Patty

Dumfriesshire / William James Bryden - Dumfries
« on: Friday 23 February 07 20:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am just beginning a search of my Scottish ancestors.  My great-grandfather was William James Bryden.  He was born about 1838 in Dumfries.  I know he had one brother Robert Bryden who apparently ran a tobacconist shop for many many years in Dumfries.  I believe Robert also married a woman by the name of Helen Hastings. That is all I have.
By 1881 William appears in the Canadian census, so if he can be found in Scotland I would suspect it would be in the earlier Scottish census reports.  Perhaps there are also some old telephone or postal directories from the early 1900s that would indicate Robert's whereabouts?
Would anyone be so kind to perhaps have a look around and see if they might come up with some further information that I could use to extend my search?
Many thanks - I am not at all familiar with searching Scottish records and would really appreciate any help.
Sincere thanks

Thanks, Cougar

Yes it is the correct family.  And of course it has opened a new line of investigation for me.
Isn't genealogy wonderful?

I am hoping SKS can do a look-up for 2 addresses on the 1841 census:

15 Harrow Street, Marylebone
11 Cornwall Street, Lismore Grove

I am hoping to confirm some known KILBEY ancestors, and perhaps find one or two more I am not familiar with.

Many thanks!
Patty

Kilbeys - 1800-1900

Looking for a link between the Kilbeys of Bethnal Green, Shoreditch and St. Pancras.

As so many of these Kilbeys share common first names there must be a link somewhere!!

My St. Pancras Kilbeys include Charles Alexander, Joseph, Henry George and Alfred amongst many others.

Please help me reunite this family!!
