Canada Lookup Request / Re: William Musson and the Blizzard
« on: Sunday 23 January 11 20:50 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you, Debbie
October 31, 1849, Parish Church of St. John, Hampstead, vol.3, p.178
I have the cert. image, no.418, p.209, Occupation: labourer.
Can you find any reference to William Musson being a Baker ? Also
there is a strong suspicion that he may have married previously, to an Eve _ _?
I agree about the baptism later in life, it is unusual though. I can't explain why he wasnt given as deceased in 1862 and 1869. I think there is something shady going on here.
Apparently son Howard Whiteman (Wightman) Musson was married to a Blanche Pooke in England on 10 Dec. 1873 prior to his Australian marriage to my Grandmother, Emily Jane Ord in 1907. - Whether this was bigamous or not is unclear at this time, but not impossible, given that Howard was a sailor, was supposed to have been shipwrecked, joined a Australian Masonic Lodge in1892, yet was not found on the Aus. Electoral Rolls until 1903. Nothing about this previous marriage is known by our family.

Hi Debbie,
yes, you've got my family,
I have only been able to find from FreeBMD indexes:
BIRTH:                            Joanna Rosella Musson
year of Reg:                   1852
Quater:                          Oct,Nov,Dec.
District:                           Hendon (1837 - 1947)
County:                          Middlesex
Vol.                                 3A
Page.                              80

Birth:                               Poynton Musson
year of Reg:                    1856
Quater:                           Oct,Nov,Dec.
District:                           Hampstead
County:                          Greater London, Middlesex.
Vol.                                 1A
Page.                              448

1881 England census:    Poynton Musson, age 24
                                       Jane Musson, age 50
It seems you have dates misprinted, perhaps ? although baptisms could be performed at any time.
Joanna Rosella Musson married Vorne William Rivers in last Qtr. of 1881, can't find her on census. I can't find the family in 1871 either, but Howard was in the Royal Navy at Spithead, Hampshire, aboard HMS. Minotaur.
He and Poynton turned up in Aus. around 1892.
Any opinions about the fate of William Musson would be most helpful, I am sorry if I offended anyone with my previous comments.

Hi Kay,
Yep, I think I did post somewhere about French Canada a while back, - it was a bit of a stab in the dark, dont know why I said that. I may have assumed that because the name Musson has French connotations, or it was something I heard in the past, I dont know.
He was on the English census of 1851, was  home at Hampstead for the birth of son Poynton Musson on Oct. 31 1856 (again I would asume this), but then dissappears. he is not on the 1861 British census. I wonder if there would be a newspaper report about the death somewhere??

Hi Nick
Please insert 'snowstorm' - I dont like using Americanisms if I can help it. I'm an Aussie, you see, hate the way the Queens English is misused.

Canada Lookup Request / William Musson and the Blizzard

Hi everyone.
My G-grandfather perished in a snowstorm/ blizzard somewhere in Canada around 1857 - 59. His name was William Musson, born about 1816 England, was a member of a Temperance Movement touring that country warning of the dangers of alcohol abuse. He does not appear on the 1861 census.
Does anyone know where I could find such records about the Blizzard and of his death or even of the society he was a member of ??

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Joneses in Palmerston (south)

Hi Signal,

I had a look and there is certainly some interesting stuff, although I cant imagine my grandfather being a landholder, but that is possible. He may have got into debt over land investment, Papers Past is an excellent site, thanks for your help.
Thomas was a Tailor and Phoebe was a tailors assistant (cutter), - he also liked drinking, and I think that this may have been the reason for his departure back to Melbs, - leaving his father behind.
Robert must have been a man of faith, as he was buried in a family plot belonging to the Port Chalmers Congregational Church Minister, James Mugford Grant. Perhaps there was some argument over Thomas' drinking. There is no acknowledgement to Thomas on Roberts death entry, as are his eldest son and two daughters in England, which makes me think of some sort of dispute.
Cheers, David    :o

Hello Kiwi 1/2 Pint.

The only immigration/emmgration records I know of are at PROV. - An excellent source, but I have tried all search terms I can think of, but no dates, names, or ships match up, unless the family went to Tas. first or left from a NSW. port, - but not much there either.
I'll keep looking, cheers

Hi Majam,

Pheobe was pregnant with Dorothy in 1897 and so the family returned to Melbourne. (cant find exact date of her birth), but the record states Dorothy Winifred Jones b. Kew, (Melb.) 1897 #12140. Robert Jones died on 17 Dec. 1897, was buried at Port Chalmers on 20 Dec. 1897. His wife Emma returned to Aus and died at Kew in 1906. There is some dispute over his age at death 71 yrs. or 77 yrs.
I havent had any luck locating the Jones' emigration to NZ. in 1891 - (much less them going back to Melbs.), but you would think a family of 4 adults and 4 children would be easy to trace.
Thanks for your input, everyone.
David.

      Frederick Thomas b. W/hampton 1883
Ellen Maud b. Kew, Melbourne 1886
