Thanks for the pictures. I had seen the one of Rose before, but the one of Ria was new to me.

Thank you for the offer of the pictures, yes, I and my wife would really like to see them. My cousin whose father was a Texan, the family migrated south and west over the 400 or so years since Plymouth Rock, can trace her father's line back to the guy who captained the Mayflower.
I thought I had the daughter who died listed, but must look more.

As for the presidential debate, we have a 'media star' as our Prime Minister now, and although I don't agree with everything he has done, I think we needed a new broom. We are visiting Cincinnati this weekend where I'm expecting Donald will be the big subject of conversation unless our host bans all political discussions, an action I would agree with.

My connection is through my wife. Richard Bagley, b Rathmillie, Ireland 1829, m Catherine Bland was my wife's  GGG grandfather. Of his children, Frederick A joined the Mounties and was present at the treaty signing when Sitting Bull came north to Canada after Little Big Horn.  His brothers all moved to California, one of whom was Alexander T, father of Rose Agnes.

Thank you, your information at least gives a reason for the breakup of the marriage. If you are connected to the Bagley family, its quite a family to have a connection with.

Hi, yes, I think you are right and have also pointed me onto the right track for more research. Given the practice of naming children after grandparents, uncles and aunts that seems to have been prevalent then, I'd bet that JBH was named Joseph after his uncle, making ESB his cousin.
It looks like an East Shilvinghampton and a West Shilvinghampton can still be found on the maps, just east of the Portesham area, but they look like just one farm and outbuildings in each case.  The OS map mentions 'village earthworks' between the two locations, so presumably that was the old village site.
I'd guess that in the early 19th century it would have been a hamlet in its own right, but had no church. OPC lists it as one of the hamlets in the parish of Portesham.

Thanks Maureen, that suggestion is a very possible one. Family stories say they came from the Weymouth area, and I think Portesham is close enough to be included in that.
Might I ask your connection to the Longbredy Hounsells. If you'd prefer to send that in private, my email is (*)

Dorset / Joseph Meech at 10 Downing Street
« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 00:33 BST (UK)  »
Is there any kind individual who can help me track the later (after 1881) history of this individual. He was born in Buckland Newton abt 1862, baptised 20 Apr 1862, and in 1881 shows up as a footman at 10 Downing Street working for William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister at the time. After that he disappears from the records. Thank you in advance for any help

John Joseph Broe appears in the 1881 UK census as a 'licentiate of the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons, Edinburgh. I  think that means he's a newly qualified doctor. So after he dies I can't see his family (moneyed to afford a doctor son) shipping his daughter out as an orphan.
