Thanks for your efforts.  Most of the info I had already and I had the forlorn hope that someone somewhere had an Alfred with parents Wm Jones and Jane Scarlet in their tree!

The Alfred B. 1838 Birmingham went to Australia with his family and disappeared without trace but the ref to the Army records 1861 is one I'll definitely follow up.  It could explain why Alfred does not appear in census refs until 1881.

Again, thanks for your efforts.

Cheers, Sue

I have birth cert for an Alfred Scarlet with parents Jane Scarlet and William Jones, a Waterman.  Alfred was born March 1843 in the Pershore Union Workhouse.  Does anyone have any further info?

Cheers,  Sue

Hi Karen

Thanks for the details.  That's the ref I had down but had not sent for the cert.  I have a birth ref of Holborn March 1867 but again have not sent for the cert.

I have, however, sent for the Rainbird cert in case it sheds any light.

Regards,  Sue

Does anyone have any info re the above?  I have her birth cert (parents Wm Henry Walker, a coachman non-domestic and Jane Ellen Walker).  The address was 9 Prebend St, Islington.

I also have the 1911 census ref but cannot find a marriage cert or a death ref for Ellen, who was not with the family (or seemingly anywhere else!) in 1911.  She was shown as 'late Bartlett' and 'formerly Phillips'  on Edith's birth cert and I've checked these refs out.  There is a possible re-marriage for Ellen to a Herbert Rainbird in June 1919.

Also cannot find a death ref for Wm Henry Walker who was born 1867.  His marriage to Ellen must have been between 1908 and 1911 as his first wife died 11th Sep 1908 and was living at the marital home at the time.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Regards,  Isobel

Good Evening and thank you all for your fulsome replies.

Perhaps I should have made it clear that I had the later census refs, including the mysterious ref to Yousull, and Mary still in Lincoln in 1911.

I have the Foleshill family down as a possibility for Mary but have nothing conclusive as to where she went when she left home.  I also wondered if Yousull could be Hearsall, Coventry and got the birth cert for a Mary b. Meriden but it was a different family.

I got the name Wagstaff from the birth certs for their children (Charles) Henry and Emily.  Alfred was a watchmaker but was a dock labourer when he died in Hull Workhouse in 1901 (yes - it was the right ref Trish, even though the age is wrong.)  There was another Alfred Scarlett married to another Mary (Ann) living in Hull at the same time but he was still alive in 1911.  They came from London.

Have never managed to find the birth ref for the eldest son Alfred supposedly born Bristol in 1879.

I'll investigate the Pershore ref (thank-you) as it doesn't ring a bell so fear I could have missed it even tho' I've been chasing this wretched family since about 1990!

The ref to a Mary Scarlett marrying Frederick Swallow originated with me.  She names her father as Charles Beckett, a Pulleyman, which would indicate a dock or colliery worker.  More mystery and frustration!

Apologies if I've broken any rules by posting an over-long mail or replying to all the posts in one go.  I'm new to the forum.

Regards and thanks again,
Isobel

Does anyone have any info re Alfred Scarlett who in 1881 said he was born in Coventry?  (Family legend was that he was Irish.)  He and his wife Mary nee Wagstaff, also born Coventry appeared in 1881 in their 30s but there are no earlier records.
