Thanks for that advice.
I've never looked up Parish records before. Where do I find them?
Regards,
Eunice

Steve,
Thank  you for your message.
In fact I have the details, but have not consulted the wills and inventories but shall do it on Monday.
I would still like to find "precise" evidence of the marriage of Alexander and Margaret and their respective parents.
The family tree is not mine!

You're right, it was Newhills and he did farm at Clova. It was his wife, Helen who came from Kildrummy.
Yes I have his death as 16 Apr 1863 and his wife Helen as 30 Sep 1852. They are both buried at Essie.. However, as I said, on his death cert his parents are listed as Alexander Hall and Margaret Anderson whilst I can find no trace of the said Margaret Anderson having married his father, Alexander Hall. So really its them that I want to pursue.
Thank you for helping me.

Yes I've tried lots of sites to see if anyone is researching Winchester and have found a few, but none going too far back.
So I shall try with the tips you give and see where it leads. Hopefully, fingers crossed I'll find out something;
With another branch of my family, I'm amazed at what I've come up with by "googlin"!

Thank you, GR, so much for all these possibilities.
I shall start on Monday and see what I can find.
Will I be able to find some of them on the web? That is the way I have to operate as I live in Belgium.

Yes I've tried that. I was wondering if there were more "local" records held as it is more difficult to get information on-line when one goes back in time.
I am trying to trace the name Winchester  back to its origins in Morayshire as it is obviously not a local name.
A historical piece I read relates that the name goes back to Bishop John Winchester, an Englishman who came to Scotland in the retinue of King JamesII. He was in fact his chaplain.
My question is -if that is the case, then were the original Winchesters in Moray all illegitimate children of the Bishop?

Aberdeenshire / Halls frm Kildrummy

Does anyone have any information on the Halls  from Newhills,Kildrummy? I have information back to Robert b.1792 and his wife  Helen Duncan from whom I am descended.
Robert's father appears to be Alexander Hall but there is no trace of a mother. I was told by a distant relative that Alexander's wife was Margaret Anderson and I believe she is on his death certificate, however I have no proof of that.
As the Hall family appear to have farmed there for many years, I assumed that I would easly trace Alexander's ancestors but so far no luck. By contrast, Robert's wife's family, Duncan and Lumsden go back some way in the Kildrummy area.
Thank you.

Moray (Elginshire) / Records in Speymouth 16thcentury?

One branch of my family hails from Speymouth in Moray.
Are there local records that can be consulted? I have some information back to about1780-1750 but then it is very sketchy and I would like to get the right info.
