Tipperary / Re: Birth records help for Comerfords - Templemore
« on: Monday 26 April 21 16:18 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help please with Comerfords in Templemore Tipp.
I am looking for information regarding the family of Thomas and Denis Comerford - they are sons of William and Mary (nee Talbot/Gurbit/Turbit - writing really hard to read) Comerford. Thomas was born circa 1834 and Denis born circa 1837.
They both went to Australia in 1862.
I have never been able to find birth records or marrriage records for their parents.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thks
Brenda
Brenda,
I am doing a bit of research on this family. I think we have a DNA link.
Can you private message me?
Many thanks,
Michael

Making alterations to you farm without the Landlords permission was a chargeable crime called Waste, it features quite a lot during the Land War when farm buildings were used to house evicted tenants.
It can sometimes be noticeable how many changes there are to out offices between the 1901 and 1911 census, once the farmer owned the farm (usually just before or shortly after 1901) and no longer had to bow to the Landlord's wishes.
I suppose several holdings were bought out between 1901 and 1911, what with the Wyndham Land Act of 1903 etc. Maybe the Valuation Office's records will give an indication as to whether an "immediate lessor" was bought out in that decade. The search goes on...

Many thanks for all the replies.
Apologies for not taking the time to thank each of you individually.
I'm glad I asked the question and glad of the informative responses.
I suppose it would have been nigh impossible for the census enumerators to make accurate returns where the users of the out-offices and farm-steadings were liable to use the structures as they pleased and to change their use from time to time.

Ireland / Query regarding Form B.2 on census
« on: Friday 12 July 19 19:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Form B.2. on the 1901 census is the "Return of Out-Offices and Farm-Steadings".

The list of buildings on each Form B.2. includes "barn", "shed" and "store".

Presumably there were specific definitions of the terms "barn", "shed" and "store" by 1901, so that the census enumerators knew what to record on each Form B.2.

Has anybody any idea as to where I should look in order to find those definitions?

I have an idea myself as to what might distinguish a barn from a shed and a shed from a store etc. but I'm hoping to find the exact definitions that the census enumerators had to follow in 1901.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Michael

Hi all, I'm hoping somebody might be able to help me.
In a nutshell, I'm looking to find out who lived at one specific address in Middlesbrough in 1957 and whether they were also there in 1956 and 1958. I can explain why in detail, if necessary.
The electoral rolls are the only source I can think of to do this.
Is there anybody who thinks they might be able to help me with this?
I don't know what I can offer in return but I'm open to suggestions.
Many thanks,
Michael

Many thanks.
It's nothing urgent anyway!

In 1958 & 1959 the eligible voters at 12 Haymore Street in the Middlesbrough West Consituency were

Stephen Moses and Kathleen A Moses.

I suggest again that you look for her in the 1939 register.
Dawn, are you still in a position to carry out searches of the 1958 and 1959 voter lists in Middlesbrough?
I need help looking something up.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know what to offer in return but I'm open to suggestion.

Thank you! Thank you!  Thank you!

This is a great breakthrough for the Devaney family and your lead is very much appreciated.  That is my Michael Hopkins in Russeltown and I couldn't be happier with this confirmation.

Thank you!

Crabby

I'm actually a descendant of Margaret Devaney's brother Mark as it happens. Margaret's brother Thomas is in the Griffith Valuation.
As I mentioned, I didin't record Michael and Margaret's descendants when I had the chance but if you have any trouble getting that book, be sure to contact me and I'll look it up (it's in the National Library here) and I'll get whatever info you want.

I'm glad to be of help.

Hi crabbya, the people that you are researching should all in a book called:

Family history of the Donnellys and the Crushells of Belmont, Co. Galway by Fr James J Donnelly.

I read it some years ago because I was researching Margaret Devaney's family. She was one of the Devaneys of Lissananny, Kilconly, Co Galway. She was born in 1819 and died around 1911 (daughter of David Devaney and Mary Connell). She married Michael Hopkins who was from Russelltown, Miltown, Co. Galway. I never took down who their children were at the time but I'm certain that their descendants were listed.
