Many thanks for your quick reply - I'll have a look. I might need to send an email to https://scottishprintarchive.org/ to see if they can help.

I am looking for more information on the Huguenots in Canongate, Edinburgh.

A great aunt did a family tree back to Nicolas Deschamps (spelt in many different ways) but I don't have any primary sources to back up her tree. He was in Edinburgh in the 1660s and is mentioned as being brought over from France with Nicolas Dupin to work as a papermaker. Where would the archives from this time be held? Is there a papermaking archive/museum that might hold the key?

Any ideas of where to start my research would be most welcome.

Many thanks for all your help - the photos are lovely.

I didn't know about the tree numbers - the ashes were scattered in 1966.  A general view of the area would be wonderful - thank you.

Still waiting for a photo if anyone is going that way!

Armed Forces / Can't find a death!
« on: Friday 10 September 10 12:34 BST (UK)  »
My distant relative can't be found!  He is alive with wife on 1911 cecsus and I have found her death and burial in the expected place in 1916 Q1.  In 1916 Q4 there is a possible match for his death but in Chelsea.  Do you think there is any possibility that after his wife's death he became an 'in-pensioner' at Chelsea Hospital?  There is no mention of his being in the army at any stage that I can find and he doesn't seem to be on the FindMyPast Chelsea Pensioner records so far.  Could he have served for a short time in between the census and been invalided out with a pension?  Would I be likely to find out more by visiting TNA?  Bit too expensive to keep getting certificates just on the off-chance.  Is there a record of those who die at the hospital or a particular burial place - a Chelsea cemetery perhaps?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Thanks for the thought - I had considered this but can't tie things up at the moment :(
I like to be fairly sure of my facts before sending for certificates otherwise it is so costly!

I understood the ones for that period were not available - perhaps I am wrong!

Born 1837 Norfolk, on all census, married aged 24,  wife dies Q1 1916 - where is he?  The only death for the correct age is in Chelsea Q4 1916!  Both on 1911 with servant and married for 50 years.  Is there any possibility that he was in the army for a very short time and after his wife died he went to the Royal Hospital and so died in Chelsea?  All seems a bit far fetched to me! Any other ideas?
