Westmorland / Re: Ellwood, Thomas of Kendal Westmorland
« on: Friday 14 February 20 16:23 GMT (UK)  »
According to the marriage cert on Ancestry, Thomas Ellwood married Miriam Wilcock in Tunstall Lancashire 21st Aug 1851. Thomas, address was New Hutton and his father was Thomas Ellwood, a miller. Miriam's address was Leck? and her father was Richard Wilcock a farmer. The witnesses were Edward Ellwood and Elizabeth Robinson.

It was a catholic wedding.

So Thomas was not the son of Edward Ellwood and Abigail Shepherd.

That's right. This one's parents were Thomas Ellwood and Agnes Townson or Townsend.

It is his grandparents who were Edward Ellwood and Abigail Shepherd.

I am looking for the ancestors of Thomas Ellwood (born 1802, died Oct 1876, in Kendal) and spouse Agnes Townsend of Westmorland.

They had a son, Thomas Edward Ellwood born 12/15/1831 in New Hutton and came to USA 1855 with wife Mirriam Wilcox born 7/30/1829 in England.

We have him as the son of Edward ELLWOOD and Abigail SHEPHERD.

We have quite a bit of information on his son Thomas who married Miriam and their descendants.

My Mother was an Ellwood born at New Hutton. Going back 6 generations in my family my Grandfather William Ellwood b.1796 was brother to Thomas Ellwood b.1802 who married Agnes Townsend.

That would be William Ellwood who married Agnes Douthwaite.

Can you tell us more about that branch of the family?

I have 7 kids for them -- which one are you descended from?

Thomas Ellwood b.1802 at New Hutton, married Agnes Townsend at New Hutton on 14/11/1825. Had a son Thomas born New Hutton 15/12/31 and died in Washington, Pennsylvania on 16/11/1901.He married Miriam Wilcox on 21/08/1852 T St John the Baptist church in Tunstall, Lancashire. They had 10 children, the first 2 in England and the remainder in Washington.

We have Thomas b. 1802 marrying Agnes Townson, not Townsend.

I think we have managed to sort out these families a bit more accurately now.  :)

I have attached family group sheets showing the information I now have on the Thomas Ellwood who married Agnes Townson, and the Thomas Ellwood who married first Isabella Dent and then Elizabeth Graham (born Burton).

Derbyshire / Samuel and Elizabeth Sims
« on: Wednesday 02 May 18 15:09 BST (UK)  »
Samuel SIMMS or SIMS married Elizabeth STEWARDSON or STUARDSON at St Alkmund's Church, Derby -- or it could have been St Paul's, Little Eaton, which was a chapelry of St Alkmund's.

There was another Samuel SIMMS or SIMS who married Elizabeth NEEDHAM about 5 years alterwards.

The difficulty I'm having is sorting out which children belonged to which couple.

I'm not asking for lookups here -- it's way too complicated, but I'm wondering if there's anyone familar with the area, or who might be interested in one of these families, who would be willing to help me tackle the problem.

Derbyshire / Re: Donisthorpe

I don't know if this is the right county, but can anyone tell me but what was the next Parish to "Oakthorpe & Donisthrope" in 1891. The sub district was Hartshorn (Ashby De La Zouch).
The reason I ask this is I have an address in Acresford St which fails to appear on the area census. The most probably reason is that the remainder of the road fell under a different sub district.
Any ideas gratefully received.

At one time Donisthorpe was on the border of Leicestershire and Derbyshire. One side of the river was in one country, and the other half in the other. So you may find what you want under Leicestershire. Some of my wife's ancestors were born there, and were baptised at Over Seal which was then, I think, in Leicestershire. The country boundaries have changed several times.

Edward Matterson:

Probable baptism: Mar 14,1790 Aldborough,Yorkshire. Father-Peter.

Married ( says age 24 of Leeds) Elizabeth HARDWICK Dec 6 1813 Catton,Yorkshire.
Maureen

I have a John Kitching Matterson born about 1820 in Yorkshire, parents C. Matterson and C. Hardwick.

He had a brother George Octavius Matterson (suggesting that there may have been seven younger siblings).

Many of the descendants of John Kitching Matterson had Hardwicke as a middle name.

Just wondering if there was any connection.

Cornwall / Ann Sandercock born 1775
« on: Tuesday 21 March 17 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
Ann SANDERCOCK, daughter of Richard SANDERCOCK and Mary BENNETT was baptised at Cardinham, Cornwall on 6 August 1775.

According to some people she married Jonathan ELLICOTT in 1804 and had two daughters, Margaret and Gertrude Ann.

According to others, she married Thomas NORTHEY and had several children.

I think that the former marriage is more likely than the latter, There were several SANDERCOCK (or SAUNDERCOCK) families in Cornwall at the time, and those south of Bodmin Moor, around Cardinham, seemed to have little connection with those north of Bodmin Moor.

If anyone is working on these families, or has come across references to them, I would love to make contact.
