Hi all and thanks for all the help.

I did find the solution on the mackiev.com website. Just in case anybody else has the same issue it was on this link
https://support.mackiev.com/236179-Troubleshooting-Family-Tree-Maker

Thanks again,
Richard

Right click the icon, you should see an option to "open with".  If you're lucky ftm will be in the list you're presented with and you'll be able to tick the "always use this program" (or similar) box.  If it's not in the list I think there's an option to search for more programs.

Hi there,

i had done that already but just didn't understand the terminology, sorry. It didn't work either :-(

It maybe that a recent windows update has broken the association between .ftw files and the family tree maker program.  I had this happen to my .jpgs, it started to open them with the default m$ program and I had to reset the association.  Your computer may no longer know what to do with .ftw files.  As long as the program is still installed on the computer, and if you've not uninstalled it, it should be, you ought to be able to re-link.

Hi there,

excuse my ignorance but i'll be honest, but that went over my head lol
Is it an easy process to try?

Many thanks

I don't have FTM but you should have an Icon for it, right click on Icon, then hit More to get App Settings, click on Terminate in case something is "stuck"  then try restarting it.

If it were me I'd hit Reset after reading what that says, if that failed.....which should just Reset the App but I don't know what that Option says for FTM so can not advise on that.

If you are going to use Disc.... what does the Uninstal option tell you?  Will your Data  be affected or not?? If not...then uninstal/reinstall.

You need to read what is on your screen!!

Hi there,
did try the first one and only had the following on the menu
1 - pin to taskbar
2 - run as admin
3 - open file location
4 - don't open in this list

many thanks for the advice but guess i will have to try and dig out the disk lol

Before you try anything else restart your computer and see if that might help.
Hi there, tried that but no success, thanks anyway

Hi there,
hopefully I am posting on the correct board if not could you point me in the right direction please.
I never had issues with FTM but today when I click on the icon it won't open up. I have tried restarting the computer but still won't open. I probably have the disk somewhere to re-install but obviously I'm concerned that I will lose my original data. I did back up about 6 weeks ago but have added a lot of info since then.
Any help would be appreciated,
many thanks

Looking on GRO, the only Hodson/ Eden birth that I can find is Charlotte in 1848

Many thanks, that adds to the intrigue haha. I do have the birth certificate for Charlotte which is where I got the parents from. I'm guessing he could have been married before then as Charlotte was the 3rd child. I have Mary with the 3 children at Stanley Street, St Helens on the 1861 census. It says Mary is the head but looks like it says married to me and no Elijah. I have found them on the 1851 census in St Helens but can't find them on the 1841 census which I guess would be a big help?

Many thanks,
Richard

Hi there sgf28,

Thanks for the info. I can see why you suggested it but after looking at other trees on Ancestry etc and further info I don't think it's the correct marriage for me.

Best wishes and thanks again,
Richard
