London and Middlesex / Re: James and Elizabeth - such common names
« on: Sunday 02 January 22 22:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Valda

I just wanted to write and thank you very much for your help in tracing my ggg grandparents on both sides. A while ago you sent me a census entry for a Charles and Sarah Hunt and their family (above) - he was a Superintendant of the Victoria Park Cemetery in Bethnal Green in 1851 (I now have reason to believe that he may have helped in the design of that park). I have made big strides thanks to your information. James Thomas, Charles's father-in-law was a Chief boatman and then Coastguard and he was transferred to St Lawrence in the Isle of Wight - while he was there he and another man were in instrumental in rescuing 19 people off the foundering 430 ton ship Bainbridge, which was driven onto rocks near Atherfield.  James (and presumably Stubbs) won silver medals RNLI for Lifeboat Gallantry.

Jame's eldest daughter Sarah married Charles Hunt (he was a gardener) and moved to London. Apparently James and his wife Sarah (nee Croscombe) moved to London first and that was the incentive for the family to move there. I have discovered that Charles had a sister called Elizabeth and therefore think that Elizabeth Hunt was probably the wife of James Brown and therefore my ggg grandmother.  So the links to Wales and the Isle of Wight, as you can see has been a very important one.

They seemed to move about a great deal in those days, as James and Sarah's two eldest children were born in Swansea, Wales, but the other children were born in the IOW. I have the names of the Hunts further back, but am having difficulty linking William Hunt (1776) and Jane Devenish (1778), his wife to Thomas Hunt (born 1770, St Lawrence, IOW) and Hannah Dyer (nee Tutchell), his wife and beyond them, Thomas Hunt and Mary Coleman. Hannah Dyer was first married to Richard Dyer. I presume that William was Thomas's brother. William and Jane Devenish were married in St Lawrence, IOW in 1797.

I am also having problems finding a birth for James Thomas (may be in Wales, but not sure - 1800) and his wife Sarah Croscombe who supposedly married him in Devon where her family came from.

I have this information (below) from a private book about the Hunt family (just a couple of pages of which I found online):

Noted events in his life were:-
Charles was born at Steephill Farm, in the parish of Godshill and grew up in neighbouring St Lawrence where his father, William was born. It was here that he met his future wife, Sarah Thomas, daughter of St Lawrence coastguard and chief boatman, James Thomas and his wife Sarah nee Croscombe. Sarah was born in Swansea, Wales and christened in Northam, Devon - close to Bideford, the birthplace of her grandfather, merchant navy captain, George Croscombe. The Thomas family settled in St Lawrence circa 1826 when James was transferred from Clovelly, Devon, before moving along the coast to Atherfield Preventive Station. On 24 October, 1832, James received a silver medal for his part in risking his life to rescue passengers from the stricken brig, Bainbridge, that foundered on rocks off Atherfield.

I have not even touched on James Brown yet (Sophia Thomas's father-in-law), so more scavenging to come, but once again I really appreciate your help - a big thank you!

Kind regards
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Your post was over 10 years ago now but I am just wondering whether you have made any progress with Thomas HUNT and Hannah TUTCHELL. They had a son George. I am looking for other possible children.

Regards, Christine

Hi Mike,

Did you manage to find David's parents or birth record. I think he is possibly connected to one of my ancestors from the Isle of Wight but I need to know who his parents are.

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: Bere Ferrers - LASKEY & COWBRIDGE c.1667

Checking the Cornwall OPC site, there are 16 marriages recorded against the Parish of Beer Ferris. The earliest is Robert Helland and Elizabeth Rider , 22 ? 1667.
Looking at the original images on FindMyPast the Helland/Rider marriage is on the same page as the Lassker/Cowbridge marriage (3 entries earlier).
I wonder why the Lassker/Cowbridge (and others on the same page) do not feature on OPC. The OPC site does not identify the source of the Helland/Rider info.

Thank you for looking. I use the OPC site a lot but I didn't realise it had Devon Records. I will check out the entry when I next visit my local library.

Thank you Peter,

It is the marriage that I am primarily interested in at this stage although I do need to confirm the names of his children. The name Malachi has been passed down through the generations but I have gaps in some of the earlier information which I am trying to fill.

Apart from the mention to Bere Ferris on the online tree I also have a DNA link to a family from Bere Ferris which I would like to be able to connect back to the Laskey family.

The Cornish branch of the Laskey family starts when Malachi Laskey moved there after his marriage. He was the vicar at Stithians. Cowbridge does not seem like a common surname and I would like to confirm whether this surname is correct and where it originated from.

Hello kind people,

I have an ancestor from Cornwall by the name of Malachi LASKEY. Malachi was born at Moretonhampstead in Devon in 1642. His wife's name is Wilmot. Some family trees have her surname as COWBRIDGE.

I cannot find a record of the marriage in Cornwall but an online ancestry tree suggests that the marriage took place in Bere Ferrers in 1667.

I would appreciate a lookup to confirm this information.

Thanks.

Did you consider?

DAVID KING son of THOMAS KING/JANET KERR
22/11/1778 Newton (I guess this is the village in West Lothian)

Colin
My focus on the above couple was due to a DNA match. I have no other information about David King than the information provided above. I am after information about the descendants of the Thomas King and Ursula Stuart in the hope that it will turn up some information of value. I know for instance that trades tended to run in families so it would be interesting to know if other members of the extended family were involved in the weaving trade.

I note the marriage of David King to Sarah Fick, Falmouth 1798

Assuming this is correct Sarah Fick was born 24 May 1779  Madron, Cornwall, father John.

I cannot find the birth of Thomas or any other children.

I do note that there are about 8 David’s born 1770 – 1780 in England a Wales and a similar number in Scotland, how did you arrive at the one born in Neilston and have you checked the record on Scotland’s People?

Colin

The marriage to Sarah Fick is of interest to me but Sarah Fick is not my ancestor. I don't know whether it is the same David King that I am interested in or another person of the same name but that is a question for another time.

The marriage in question was to a Mary Bawden. This marriage took place on the 17th November 1798 at St Austell and subsequent to this a Thomas King was baptised at Stoke Damerel in Devon and this ties in with a census record indicating that Thomas was born at Stonehouse in Devon. From Thomas's second marriage I know that his father's name was David and that his prior occupation was as a weaver although at the time of his marriage he was recorded as belonging to the Royal Artillery.

The reason for my interest with the above couple is that I have a small DNA match with a descendant of Thomas King and Ursula Stuart and I have no other obvious connection to Renfrewshire that would account for the match.

Scottish naming conventions also dictate that the eldest son would have been named after the father's father. David King born at Neilston, Renfrew in 1772 was the son of Thomas King and Thomas King born at Plymouth in Devon was the son of David King.

It seems to be too much of a co-incidence not to be the same person but I need more information in order to prove it. Scotlands People will not be of much help to me at this stage unless I can narrow down my search and have something definite that I can focus on.

A Royal Artillery pension register record for a David King who went to pension from 9 Battalion Royal Artillery on 1 Jan 1812 and who died 26 Feb 1872 at Perth has a birth place of Crieff.

Looking at discharge records I think that is a man from Muthill (Muthell/Mewthell) who enlisted 30 March 1810 and was discharged to pension on 31 December 1811 on grounds of impaired vision.

There was more than one David King and because there are two references I don't know whether they both relate to the same person or whether there is a record for two people of the same name. I know that one person only served for a year but he was only in his early twenties at the time so this is not my person.
