thank you Osprey for your help
Is there a directory of stamping mills in Cornwall records office do you know?
I understand that Billbeary (or however this was spelt) Mill was a stream tin mine but wondered if any of the OPC's or Cornish Tin Mines Associations might be worth contacting to try and find out more?
I think my father & I found that John Roberts lived in Charlestown which I think is close to St Austell but wasn't sure if the Conrwall Record office might have old maps or papers regarding the mills in existence in the 1700? I found some helpful online material but  have so far drawn a blank - other than the wills which appear to be regarding John as it mentioned Matthew (son) and grandson (John) which ties into my family tree so far - again with help with the local OPC. Also...with help from the OPC in St Austell previously we identified that John Roberts married Elizabeth Burlace @ St Austell 18.11.1713. Not sure when Elizabeth or John died but the attached will could be her or another family relative? Any thoughts?

Dear Listers
I'm trying to find out more about a relative of mine - John Roberts who lived in St Austell in the 1700s
I believe that the attached document is his will but have been unable to trace anything about the stamping mill mentioned in the will (Billbeary Mill)
Any ideas/pointers would be appreciated

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: Parents of Mathew Roberts of Botus Fleming @1650
« on: Sunday 15 November 15 08:25 GMT (UK)  »
Morning

I am pleased to report that thanks to the excellent support from Angela Wood/OPC we believe that we have traced the ROBERT / ROBERTS line back further.

Angela's transcript of Mathew's baptism give his father as JOHN ROBERT who married JOAN BODYE in Botus Fleming on 9th October 1634. As he had a child named GEORGE, it is possible that John's father was GEORGE ROBERT & that he was baptised on 15 December 1605. If this is correct GEORGE ROBERT married GRACE BONSOLL in Botus Fleming on 31 January 1596.

We haven't been able to trace/understand why the family then moved to St Austell but understand that most moves at that time were generated by work.

I doubt I will be able to trace the ROBERT / ROBERTS line back further or find out more but am very grateful for the great support from Angela and all the other OPCs out there!

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Parents of Mathew Roberts of Botus Fleming @1650

Dear Listers

I'm trying to find out more about the Roberts family in Cornwall.

Thanks to the help from other Rootschat members and OPCs I believe I have traced my family back to the 1650s.

It appears Mathew Roberts was born 23/3/1650 in Botus Fleming (baptised 25/3/1650) and married Joan Daddoe 4/9/1686 in St Austell.

I understand that the family then moved from Botus Fleming to St Austell areas & lived for several generations in Charlestown. Various occupations from tin streaming/mining, shipwrights, quay porters and then moved to the Devonport area.

Any ideas on how I can try to trace the Roberts line back further (Mathew's parents) and the reasons the family moved from Botus Fleming to St Austell?

Thank you

Devon / Royal Dockyard Orphanage Devonport - Plymouth - George Holman
« on: Friday 09 October 15 13:44 BST (UK)  »
Dear Listers

I'm trying to find out more about a great Uncle who I posted about previously.

Thanks to other members support I have identified that he fought and died in WW1 but my father has uncovered that previously he was an inmate at the above orphanage according to the 1911 Census.

I believe his parents died in 1904 and 1906 but not sure when he was admitted or when he left the orphanage. I know he enlisted with the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1917 and died that year in action but trying to find out the missing pieces of the jigsaw.

We have some useful information from the Archives Dept at Plymouth but no other records can be found.

Any ideas would be welcomed!

The Common Room / What was the job of a quay porter back in the early 1800s?
« on: Thursday 03 September 15 22:00 BST (UK)  »
Dear Listers

I'm trying to find out more about a distant relative (John Roberts) who I believe worked as a quay porter in Charlestown, near St Austell in the early 1800s.

Believe John's son and grandson also did this role and then the family moved to Devonport to work as shipwrights and blacksmiths

Any information about what being a quay porter involved will be appreciated
