Stirlingshire / Re: Old photos - Grangemouth and Falkirk
« on: Friday 30 January 15 23:46 GMT (UK)  »
Both towns now have facebook pages, Old Grangemouth in Pictures and Old Falkirk in Pictures. The Falkirk page is a group, the Grangemouth page is a community page and open to all at present.

Whilst researching part of my tree I came across this site with images and other information relating to James and William Hunnam who were lost with their younger brother Thomas in November 1890 off of Yarmouth on FV The Brothers.

http://www.scran.ac.uk/database/results.php?field=who&searchterm=%22James+Hunnam%22&searchdb=scran

I thought it may be of interest to anyone researching this family. There are various spellings of the name which doesnt help when researching Scotlands People. Wildcards help.

Parents of the three brothers were William Hunnam/Hannam and Jane Donaldson both born c 1812.

Scotland / Re: Marriage query John Hall, Jean Kay c.1750
« on: Thursday 09 October 14 16:13 BST (UK)  »
John and Jean are my 5x Gt Grandparents.

I have never found a marriage record which leads me to believe they married irregularly.

The only possible parent (a John Hall) I have discovered on Scotlands People was born in Innerwick (about 23 miles east of Cockenzie area) in 1687 and married to an Isabel Brown 13 November 1719. I doubt very much whether this is a match for viable parentage though given the distance.

It is likely that proving lineage and marriage will be impossible.

PS The only William Fraser to have played for Scotland (according to the SFA online historical archive) at football was in 1954 and he was the captain. I must be coming over like a real party pooper........Willie Fraser was born 1929 in Brighton, Victoria, Australia and was a goalkeeper......

A couple of technical points re the uniform: The lanyard is incorrectly worn as it does not pass under the silk. The silk appears very poorly put together (it is too wide and untidy for starters)  and would not come close to passing any inspection. It has also been incorrectly tied off with a bow which has invertes cut into the tag ends. The uniform has no ranking badge or any other insignia which a serving sailor would definitely have. 'HMS' Cap tallies were not in use in WW1 and sailors were instructed to remove them or use their depot tally when on shore leave. It was WW2 when 'HMS' tallies were issued specifically for shore leave etc. The trousers would have had five or seven equally spaced creases across them and none are evident. The general impression is that the uniform was not put on by a sailor familiar with how to use the accessories. Certainly not by one getting his photo taken. I agree that it was probably provided by the studio even though the wearer was a reservist. Many reservists didn't wear uniforms because they were working in local waters and often on fishing vessels which were undertaking naval duties like observation, minesweeping and transferring cargo and personnel.....

Scotland / Re: Jimkabout Mill, two of them?

Quite correct. Slip of the brain. In addition the feu on the land was only 99 years and the Stenhouse land was freehold so the works were built at Carron......doesn't change the outcome ......well spotted though. Any genealogy info?

Jinkabout Mill, Bo'ness location is shown on this map.http://maps.nls.uk/view/74963114

It is some distance from the mouth of the Avon as stated. It probably milled for The Duke of Hamilton estate as well as local farmers. The carse was well known for growing grain with vast fields recorded to the west and north of this location. In competition was the mill south of the wall near Westquarter to the West of this location. That mill was owned by the Earl of Zetland's Kerse Estate.

RCAHMS website states: Archaeological Notes
NS97NW 84 9474 7975

'A large building two storeys high used as a corn mill having two large wheels propelled by water. Close to the mill is the dwelling house with offices attached, all in good repair; there is a vegetable garden and small farm attached. The whole is in the occupation of John Henderson and the property of the Duke of Hamilton.'
OS Name Book (Linlithgowshire), 1856.

Falkirk Collections has an image of part of the site:

This record also appears on another thread;

William Meek, probably the son of William Meek & Janet Weir, born June 19, 1784 in Jinkabout Mills, Bo'Ness Parish, Linlithgowshire, married Margaret Angus, date and place unknown. They emigrated to Quebec about 1820. His brothers, John and Thomas, also came to Quebec initially but later moved on. I would appreciate learning more about them and their ancestors in Scotland.

At one time the area was a choice for the establishment of the world famous Carron Iron Works but the lack of suitable water supply and road, river and rail access saw it discarded.

Happy hunting.

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Re: Helen Greig Marriage to William Ross

Hi Stuart

What is the descent line from Walter Ross and Rachel Hunter for your family?

I always told my father that Johnny from the Robin must be a relative but Dad had no idea of genealogy back in the 60's and early 70's and his knowledge only went back to his own grandparents. Of course the internet has made life so much different.

Is your descent from the David Ross m Alison Brown - David Ross m Margaret Jones line or another?

Happy to exchange tree info.

I am particularly interested in any photographs of the Ross family members and have many copies of Census and also BMD records from Scotlands people and would also be pleased to lock in some Bye Names or T Names to the persons in my tree.

regards

PS: I have some possible ideas on the line going beyond Walter but it is impossible to prove definitively.......there are possibly another three generations back that could be presented for consideration.
