Orkney / Re: James & Elizabeth Foulis' children
« on: Wednesday 04 January 17 23:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I found your post the other day when I was researching my Foulis side of the family. Stewart Foulis is my Great x4 Grandmother. I also am descended from her daughter Margaret Dent nee Burgar.

Stewart Burgar nee Foulis was born to Olipher Foulis and Ann Reid in 1807. Stewart is an unusual name for a girl, but we found out that Stewart was a twin. Her brother was called Stewart but he died after being born. We think the parents maybe conferred his name onto their daughter.

We aren’t sure why the name Stewart was passed on for generations, but our Nana (Stewart Burgar’s Great x2 Grandaughter) told us that her mother, Margaret’s Great Granddaughter, told her that their family was descended from Sir Patrick Stewart of Orkney. (Not a nice connection, I know :)) Apparently, that’s why back through the family, the name Stewart is used quite often. As for William Rendall Burgar, that might be because (now this is Very far back!) Stewart’s father’s Great Grandfather married an Ursula Rendall.

My Mother and Sister did a lot of the research a few years back; since I have taken it up, I’ve researched Olipher’s paternal side to around 1690 and his maternal side to around 1756. On Ann’s side, I’ve researched her maternal side to around 1720 and her paternal side to around 1680.

George Burgar was born around the same time in Westray/Papa Westray (1807). (Westray and Papa Westray were so close that they were both put on the records.) His parents were Andrew Burgar b, 1773 and Margaret Miller b. around 1776. George had six siblings: (ones I can find anyhow), Benjamin b. 1800, Elizabeth b. 1802, William b. 1805, Henry b. 1810, James b. 1815, and Mary b. 1819. George’s paternal grandparents were, William Burgar b. 1754 and Jacobina Setter b. 1756. William’s parents were David Burgar  and Marion Harcus. Jacobina’s parents were Wiliam Setter and Barbara Hughson. They all lived in the Orkney Isles.

If you would like any more info, just reply!

God Bless.

Hi Deb,
We're quite excited to have found a relation of William! We have a few photos of his sister and brother. We have attached a photo of Annie on her wedding day - you can see the resemblance to William in this photo. Did you know that Annie and John Thomas were put into an orphanage for awhile in Rockhampton? And then Emily ended up in the Goodna Asylum for awhile. When Emily placed John Thomas in the orphanage she was slightly deranged and said his name was Harry and that he was born in Ceylon.  We know that Alfred and Emily left England with 2 children, Annie and another boy they called Harry.  We think he may have died on the trip over somewhere around Ceylon and that's why Emily gave that incorrect information at the orphanage and then the  name stuck.  We have a photo of Harry (John Thomas) when he was in the war.  We have a lot of information on Emily and Alfred and the 2 children as well as some photos and links to more info online. It is too much to send just now so we will get it together and send it on Friday. Would you prefer it by email?
Going to England would be great! My daughter who started this research is extremely jealous!!
Kind Regards,
Wendy

Hi Graham,

We found the search for William Baker Searle very interesting.  We have some information  and are happy to share it with you. What is it that you would like to know? My husband's mother, as a child, remembers him coming to  her grandmothers home obviously trying to reconnect with his birth family - we don't think it was very successful.

Regards,
Wendy

Thank you so much Emily!!  :)  :)

I come through Emily's daughter, Annie Louisa. I have been able to find the decendants (it was very hard!) of William.

The sad thing about him was that when he was in his twenties he tried to find his sister (the only living relative at the time - John Thomas "Harry" had been killed in action in WWI, in 1916, his photo is on the Australian War Memorial site), he found her and tried telling her that he was her brother, but she would not believe him and her husband told him to never see them again.

He tried again when he was in his fifties, but again Annie did not believe him.... She had been in the orphanage when he was born, and oviously had never known that he existed!!  Poor William also had a terrible stutter from the age of three - sometimes he went totally 'dumb' and could not speak until he had slaped his thigh - this is what got him discharged from WWI!! I do feel sorry for him that his 'real' family never accepted him :'(

Thank you again so much!! - We do indeed owe it to Emily to find out all that we can! :)

hello :)
Thank you so much for all of your help! I have looked on Trove and cannot find a death notice, so if you ever have time could you hace a look at the Toowoomba Chronicle for me?  I do not want to be a bother!!

I would like to get a marker for her grave - if oneday I can afford it - so that she will be remembered, more, in the cemetery :)

She, her husband, and their two children immigrated from England - her infant son died at sea. When they were in Australia she had another son, but, when he was still only an infant, her husband, Alfred, absconded and left his wife and family penniless and without a home - he drank everything away.

She suffered severly from depression and became mentally ill. The two children, Annie 4, and John 1, where put into an orphanage and she was put into the Goodna Asylum. She was so ill that she put John's name down as Harry (her dead baby's name) and his birthplace as Ceylon!!!!

She eventually got out of the Asylum, had another son, which she could not afford to look after (Alfred had again gone) so she gave him up for adoption. She married William Ford in 1903 and then died in 1906.
Her story is sad, but thankfully, William was a lot nicer than Alfred!  (I just thought I would tell you this so that if you do have time to look for a death notice - this info might help.) She married William Ford in Mt. Whitestone - he was a widowed farmer with two little boys when Emily married him.

Thank you so much for your help!!! It is so much apperciated :)
Best Wishes,
Tiana :)

Thank you Marie, for all of your help :) - I will just make a note in my file that she has an unmarked grave.
Yes, she is a direct ancestor of mine - my great great great grandmother and she died of stomach cancer and exhustion.

I do not think that William Ford is buried in that cemetery because none of the ones that I saw, that are buried there, matched up with ours.

I am not surprised that you can find no sign of Alfred Baker(my great great great grandfather) - he is still a mystery to us, we cannot find a death for him anywhere. Another person doing research on him said that he amy have chnged his name.  He was a bit of a rogue!  >:(
Thank you very much for your help,
Tiana :)

Hello Marie,

Thank you so much for the trouble that you have gone to for me! :) When you mentioned 'clues' it made me smile:) because Emily's life was an entire 'mystery' to us until just recently!! Her story is very sad :'(

I had another look at the cemetery website and found the plot number:)
She is in METHODIST section 1, plot No: 012-0026

Here is the information off of the website:
Last name FORD

First name(s) Emily

Maiden name

Gender Female

Religion Methodist

Date of birth Date not available.

Date of death 20 June 1906

Date of burial 22 June 1906

Age at death 42 Years

Cemetery Drayton & Toowoomba

Interment number METH1-012-0026

As to 'clues'......   Emily was born in 1863, in England. When she died she was the wife of William Ford (b.1869), who was her second husband. Her first husband had been Alfred Baker (a terrible character!). Her maiden name was Lunnon/Lennon/Louden/ and London (she used all of them!!!!!)

I hope that something of the above may help you identify her plot  :-\

Thank you sooooo much for your help - and I do hope that I am not being too much of a bother!!!
Have a great day :)
Tiana :D

Hello Marie,

I just found your post (I don't know how old it is) and I was just wondering if you are still 'in business' :) If you are I would really appreciate a photo of the grave of
 Emily Ford
d. 20th June 1906 - 42 years old
Methodist
from the Toowoomba (Drayton) Cemetery.

I live in Victoria so it is a little hard for me to get to the cemetery! :)

If you can do it do I pm you my email address?

Thank you and have a really nice day
Tiana :)

« on: Monday 04 June 12 00:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi Mo,
I am doing research on the James Best family too:) I come through his daughter Mary Ann Milbourne nee Best. I came across this thread by accident when trying to find out about Anna Ward nee Best.

I was just wanting to know where I could get a copy of the letter that James Best wrote, that you mentioned in your post.? I have found the newspaper article, and I would love the letter too:)

I do have a copy of some of James Best's letters but they date from 1842 onwards.

If you have a copy of 'your letter' would you be able to send a copy of that:) to me via email? Let me know and if you can I will post my email address.

Thank you so much! I appriciate whatever help you can give me:)
Have a great day,
Tiana
