Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Oak Buildings, Oak Road, Redcar
« on: Monday 29 March 21 12:03 BST (UK)  »
I've discovered my grandmother was a "General Dealer" and her business premises was at Oak Buildings, Oak Road, Redcar. I presume this was a shop.

This was in the 1930s, because sadly in 1937 she was made bankrupt.

I was wondering if anyone has any information on this address in the 1930s, maybe from a trade directory, or if luck is on my side, a photo from the period?

My grandmother's name was Rachel Colley.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Northallerton Cemetery

I am looking for anyone local to Northallerton cemetery who would be kind enough to photograph a grave for me. I don’t know if there’s a headstone.

The name is Rachel Colley, d.1958, and according to the Find A Grave website there is a memorial reference 139467417. I don’t know if that helps to locate it within the cemetery or not.

I will cover all costs if that’s allowed.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Tracing the Buckles From Yorkshire
« on: Sunday 06 January 19 19:22 GMT (UK)  »
I can see this topic is very old, but for what it’s worth, I’m a direct descendant of George Buckle (c.1750-1814) and Mary Ward, both of Bedale. I’m descended from their daughter Mary Buckle (1801-1862); I also have a son for them named George b.1788. My dad and I both have DNA tested in case it would help anyone trying to sort out their Buckle line to match against us.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: Jane Brechon/Breckon c1806 Goathland.

Hi Dave, your post caught my attention because I have Breckon ancestors from Goathland too.

You said that Ralph Breckon and Margaret Wright had been suggested as parents for Jane Breckon but you didn’t know the reason.

If you look up Jane and her husband John Hugill on the 1841 census (spelled Hugel on this one) you will find Ralph Breckon (b. 1786) and Margaret (b. 1781) living next door. It seems likely they were her parents. Especially as William Hugill aged 12 was living with them, so there is some crossover between the families.

You are probably related to me. I would be interested to know if you have had a DNA test, as there’s a DNA circle on Ancestry centred on the Gurr family, as some branches ended up in the USA which always reflects in DNA results since testing is so popular over there.

My 3xGGM was Mary Gurr, born in Northiam just outside Rye in 1827. She died in 1909.

Her father was James Elijah Gurr, born in 1784 in Peasmarsh, just outside Rye. He married Sarah Eldredge and died in 1858.

His father was Thomas Gurr, born in 1752 in Peasmarsh. He married Elizabeth Bosden and died in 1826.

His father was William Gurr, born in 1724 in Peasmarsh. He married Mary Honace and died in 1785.

His father was Isaac Gurr, born in 1679 in Chiddingly; died 1763.

His father was Isaac Gurr, born in 1653 in Lewes.

This is the building in Upper Grosvenor Road that was the maternity home in the 1920s...

Kimbatty is referring to the period when the maternity home was at Highlands House. I'm attaching a couple of photos from that time, sorry they are small and not great. I was born there in 1965!

Maybe the second name really is Inverity as it looks like. I can't see originals but the name does crop up in transcript as a surname on Ancestry and Scotland's People which I don't have access to. Maybe from the place name Inverarity. So the Ross and Harvey families may have gone straight back to Scotland hence why I can't find them.
