I've been searching for Thomas' marriage to Christian and found a possible marriage - on 1st April 1809 ( in the parish of Dull, Perthshire (in Strathbraan) of a Thomas Stewart to Christian Macdonald, not Christian Macfarlane.  Source: IGI FHL Film No. 1040063 and 1040064.  Not sure if this is helpful, or if it muddies the waters!  If this is 'our' Thomas, he would be aged 20 on marriage.  Conversely, there may be no record, no surviving record of marriage, or the marriage could have been by any one of several irregular (but perfectly legal) forms, or it may have been a non-church of Scotland marriage.  Try Roman Catholic and Non-Confirmist records as well as adjacent parishes.   Indeed, a marriage may not have taken place at all and the 'wife' was simply, in local parlance, a "bidey-in" ( live-in partner) - they had them in the early 19th century too!

I'll also check my husband's other Stewart line, which comes via his great grandfather David Stewart, the father of his paternal grandmother Catherine Stewart.  That branch of the family lived and worked in Huntingtower/Ruthvenfield, in the parish of Tibbermore before moving to Luncarty in the parish of Redgorton.  Many family members were born in Caputh, in the parish of Bendochy, Perthshire which was close to Coupar Angus in Perthshire.  Several lived and died in the Coupar Angus area. This Stewart line had several family members who worked in the linen industry, which was a major focus in Perthshire at that time.  Much of the research I have done, along with other kin in the USA as well as the UK, was on the paternal family line - CRANMER (various spellings) of David Stewart's wife Helen/Ellen Cranmer.

Thanks, I meant 5x great-grandparents, not 3.  Apologies for the typo.  I'll have a look at potential grandparents for Thomas, following naming patterns and  see who it turns up.  This may take a couple of weeks as I 'm off to visit family down south and won't have time for research until I get back.

Thank you.  It is the same family.  Donald Stewart and Catherine Taylor were my husband's 3xgreat grandparents on his Direct male lne.  His paternal grandmother is from another line of Stewarts who, lived around Caputh, parish of Bendochy/Coupar Angus, but who seem to,have originated around Rattray.

Thanks, Mary.  I have the marriage certificate for William Stewart and Mary Elizabeth Semple Powrie's elder son James (b.1908) on which Charles Powrie Stewart is recorded as a witness.  Still trying to get the latter's birth record.  Sinc e it is over 100 years ago, surely Scotland's People will have released the image for viewing!

Fife / Ancestry of Wardlaw family of Dunfermline area
« on: Wednesday 25 July 12 19:59 BST (UK)  »
Looking for Wardlaw ancestors.  I've managed to get back to GEORGE WARDLAW, probably born around 1560 in Dunfermline, spouse ANNIE (a.k.a. NANS) MICHELL OR MITCHELL, but am having difficulty in finding George's parents and their ancestors.  George and Annie had at least a couple of children - NICOL, born/baptised Dunfermline 24 March 1582 and CUTHBERT, born/baptised 28 March 1585.  Was this branch of the WARDLAW family related to the BETHUNE/BEATON dynasty?  Any information would be very helpful.

Looking for information about date and place of death, as well as info. on any possible marriage/descendants for the above person who was born in the parish of Auchtergaven in 1912.  Parents possibly William Ross Stewart and Mary Elizabeth Semple Powrie.  If these parents are correct, Charles had an older brother James, born in 1908/09.

Northumberland / Re: Cranmer and Hedley families, Northumberland
« on: Friday 11 May 12 08:29 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for all the information about local industries, Christine.  That's very useful.   I'll also follow up on the link you provided.  I noticed that Hedley was a common name locally and that does indeed require great care to unpick which one is which.  Thanks also to Radcliffe for the information provided. I am familiar with both Newcastle and Carlisle, having visited both often and am familiar with the road between and various oints on it such as Hexham (which I've also previously visited) and Haltwhistle, but not the more rural parts of the County.  I have a friend and former work colleague who is Northumbrian and who now lives in Alnwick.  I've been promising to visit for some time, so must actually get round to doing so.
The help and advice I've been given will  certainly be of benefit to my search for Cranmer kin.  I've unearthed a multiplicity of spellings of forenames as well as surnames - all definitely from the same family, many errors due to phonetic spelling by the person writing down the records and to errors in transcription where writing has been difficult to read.  Thanks again, everyone..
