Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: COMPLETED - Hartburn - Potter family
« on: Wednesday 20 May 20 12:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi Chris, indeed I am! A.N. Other from Hull did a lot of travelling round the north east getting information on Whinhams. He was in touch with my dad. He produced a lot of family trees for the various branches, some good, some bad! I too eventually started doing loads of research on the Whinhams and have several private trees on Ancestry for the various branches, trying to get back to a relatively common root.....frustrating, the records run out before there's any merge! I managed to get the Hull group back to Rothbury via Alnwick. Even more frustrating, DNA gave me a relationship to the Hull branch but I run out of Rothbury registers before I can make a link.....its there somewhere.
Look forward to hearing from you, Janet

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: St Mary the Virgin, Ware: Parish Registers - WHEATLY

I found what I was looking for at the LDS London Family History Centre (currently located at the National Archives, Kew).

There were 3 witnesses to the marriage: Thomas Hobbs; Mary Hobbs; Benjamin Ginn ... none of whom appeared to be a "professional witness".

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / St Mary the Virgin, Ware: Parish Registers - WHEATLY
« on: Tuesday 08 August 17 21:44 BST (UK)  »
Marriage on 26 Jul 1778 between JOHN WHEATLY & MARY ANSELL. I have this info. from a transcript that does not provide full details, e.g. not the witnesses. Please could someone be kind enough to lookup the full details for me.

It would also be useful to know if it appears that any of the witnesses are "professional witnesses".

Thanks   :)

Yes, I agree that is probably my next best step.

A very good question, what was Boyd's source ???

The marriage I am looking at is Samuel Leman & Dorothy Armiger 1675. From his father's Will, I know that Samuel (ABT 1635) was at Mendham in 1658. Dorothy was baptised at Letheringham in 1645, but I have no evidence to suggest the marriage took place there.   :-\

Hi Mike

Many thanks for your prompt and informative reply. Since my first post, I have unearthed some circumstantial evidence that suggests the marriage might have taken place in Mendham. My understanding is that pre-1678 parish records for Mendham did not survive. So, I think I will have to make do with Boyd's marriage index. The FindMyPast transcript of the latter gives the 'place' as "Archd" (as opposed to Archd M. L.). Even if this is a reference to an Archdeaconry of Suffolk Marriage Licence, I think I am no further forward because those 1675 ML's do not appear to have survived. C'est la vie!

Suffolk / St Edmundsbury Cathedral - Marriages ?
« on: Friday 17 March 17 13:01 GMT (UK)  »
After a lot of fruitless searching, I am beginning to wonder if my ancestor's marriage in 1675 or 1676 was in St Edmondsbury Cathedral. Is this plausible? If so, are any records available?

Pete,
I'm descended from another daughter....Bella. I have a photograph of Bella with Jane and, I think, another sister, Mary. Robert did marry Elizabeth Moor but no wedding record. Another brother married at Gretna so I guess ours was probably a cross border too.
