Technical Help / Re: Laptop to separate screen
« on: Friday 15 April 11 21:42 BST (UK)  »
You might have to tell your laptop to switch to the external display by pressing the "Fn" and a function key at the same time.

Have any of your function keys (F1 through to F12) got another label in a different colour? -my F8 key is also labelled "CRT/LCD" and switches between the internal and external screens when pressed at the same time as the blue "Fn" key.

Acer's might use F5.

If you have received spam email from them, it has happened before, apparently in error:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,54546.0.html

(the two sites are registered at the same postal address)

But echoing some of the concerns in the earlier linked topic, if you have never entered your email address on their site(s) or sent email to them, then how did they get hold of it?

As a general rule, if in doubt of any email, just delete it. Do not reply to it asking to unsubscribe or to be removed from their list - this just confirms your email address to the bad guys

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Same person appears twice in one census?

Thanks for the replies.

I think all the evidence pointed to it being the same Sarah, but nice to have confirmation that this can (and did) happen.

Before clicking on ANY link in an email (or website, for that matter), check where that link will take you. For example, using Internet Explorer:

Moving the mouse over the "Reply" button shows the address in the bottom left. If it doesn't look familiar then delete the email and DO NOT click the link.

Also, ignore the first part the address. If the link had said "rootschat.somewhere.com/..." then be extremely cautious.

Best advice ... when you first sign up to a website, BOOKMARK that address. Then make sure you only go to that site through YOUR bookmark. So when you sign up to rootschat BOOKMARK the login page, then EVERY time you access rootschat go though the BOOKMARK, NOT the link in the email.

Census and Resource Discussion / Same person appears twice in one census?
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 01:03 BST (UK)  »
I have a Sarah Wood appearing in two 1851 census entries about 2 miles apart:

HO107/1740 folio 356 p2
Cattel Bank, Kingsthorpe, Northants
Age 19, b West Haddon, Northants
(Parents James and Charlotte, and brothers Thomas and Josiah at same address)

HO107/1740 folio 209 p25
College Street, Northampton
Age 19, General servant, b West Haddon, Northants
(Henry Ager, age 28, shoemaker also at same address)

IGI has Sarah Wood, christened 17 June 1832, West Haddon, Northampton (Parents James & Charlotte)

The 1861 census has
RG9/938 folio 74 p3
13 Cock Lane, Kingsthorpe, Northampton
Henry Ager, widower, age 38, shoemaker
Sarah Wood, widow, age 28, housekeeper, b West Haddon

14 Cock Lane
James and Charlotte Wood

Henry Ager and Sarah Wood married in Kingsthorpe on April 17 1866 and Sarah's father is given as James Wood. Witnesses are Josiah and Mary Wood. Henry's condition on the certificate in widower but Sarah's is spinster.

It appears to me that it is the same Sarah Wood in both 1851 census entries. Has anyone else come across anything like this?

Northamptonshire / Re: Charlotte Hall of Stoke Bruerne

Wow, many thanks everyone.

Only a couple of miles between Grafton Regis and Stoke Bruerne so the daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth looks promising, although I'm not aware of any more Anthonys in their immediate descendants.

Thanks Sandy,

I'd had a look at Norman's site and been in touch with him, but although he was most helpful we had no luck in finding Charlotte.

Charlotte (and James) Wood appear in the census returns:

1841West HaddonAge 43b Northants (1798)
1851Cattel Bank, Kingsthorpe Age 53b Stoke Bruerne (1798)
1861Cock Lane, Kingsthorpe Age 61b Stoke Bruen (1800)
1871Cattle Bank, KingsthorpeAge 76b Stoke Breuin (1795)

IGI lists a marriage between of James Wood and Charlotte Hall at "Bannes Church, West Haddon" on 9 Nov 1829 but there is no batch/sheet reference.

Their five children are listed in IGI batch I007108, all baptized in West Haddon.

I'm wondering if the marriage detaills have been transcribed correctly, so I'll take another look through all the Charlottes on Norman's site.
