Family History Beginners Board / Re: mcmahon's in jersey city & new york city

Thank you for your reply.
Bernard, born 1837 & Mary, born 1841 were married either in New York City or Jersey City. Bernard immigrated from Ireland, County Meath to New York City in the early 1850's with his family, mother, possibly Mary, father, possibly John, brothers, Patrick, Oliver, Edward & Michael and a sister unknown. Mary was born either New York, per 1870 census or England, per her obit. Bernard died in January 1872 and Mary 1874.  I have records of their obits from Jersey City.

I am trying to find information on a marraige between a mary t r staff b 1841 & a bernard j mcmahon b 1837, both famlies lived in new york, ward 7 in the 1857 directory.  I could not find them in the 1860 census.  In the 1870 census they lived in Jersey city new jersey and had three children the eldest born in 1866.  the three children were baptized at st peters church in jersey city records i searched through fhc. i do know that bernard came from county meath but am hoping a marraige record would include more information on the parish.

Shane,
Thank you for your reply.  The family was Catholic and the 1872 Jersey city, NJ  obit. for Bernard stated Meath was the county from which the family came. I don't know if any family remained in Meath, but before Bernard died at the age of 31, he was told by his doctors to return to Meath (per the obit), maybe he still had family there. My US research lead me to Griffiths evaluation of 1848 and I mapped out the McMahon's and found family names Patrick, Edward, Michael & Bernard) only in the civil parish of Monalty.  Bernard was only about 17 when he immigrated but I believe his brother,  Patrick was born in 1822 (US census of 1870).  John who I believe to be their father was 88 and died in New York in 1857.  The family were all coopeers and started and ran several barrel companies.
