Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Nature of offence
« on: Friday 21 August 20 14:49 BST (UK)  »
Thank you that makes sense.

James Letting is a cousin of my 4x Great Grandfather and got transported to Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) for life for stealing a horse. When he was there, he escaped from gaol and lived as a bushranger for several months before handing himself in after learning of a proclamation promising to pardon any bushrangers that surrender themselves. This didn't turn out to be the case for James though who was transported on to increasingly severe penal colonies and ultimately drowned at the age of 27 at Macquarie Harbour. It must have been especially terrible for him believing as he did that he was meant to receive a pardon in return for his surrender.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Nature of offence

Hi all

Please could anyone help with deciphering part of the attached document which is a list of prisoners who were punished in Newcastle, Australia in 1821.

The section I need help with is under the heading 'Nature of Offence' which appears jointly for Edward O'Hara, James Letting and Joseph Saunders and for which they each were sentenced to receive 100 lashes.

I think the first part may read 'mutinous conduct'? And there's something about liberty at the end but I can't quite decipher the rest of it.

Many thanks!

Bertie died on the Titanic so we know he didn’t have any children.

We have a lot of Titanic paraphernalia saved by his family as a result. This is included in the collection we want to pass on. I’m just struggling to find a living relative I can contact.

Yes I see you’re right now. Sorry they’re not my family so I had to do a quick search!

Have shared my post in the Hampshire group too in case anyone has links with the Hampshire Laceys!

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / LACEY Family of South Stoneham
« on: Sunday 07 June 20 17:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I am trying to trace living descendants of the LACEY family who were living in Hampshire in the late 1800s.

My Great Aunt was married to Charles Briggs who was the son of Dorothy LACEY (b. 1895, South Stoneham to Edward Lacey and Clara BURCH). Charles was an only child and they did not have any children of their own so I have inherited (from Charles via my Great Aunt) lots of family documents and photographs for the Lacey family which I would like to return to a living descendant.

Dorothy's siblings who may have living descendants include Minnie/Minna (b. 1886), Edward (b. 1888), Charles (b. 1890) all born in Colchester and Evelyn (b. 1897) and May (b. 1903) all born in South Stoneham.

If anyone has any connections to help me send the things I have to their rightful home, that would be fantastic.

Otherwise if anyone has any suggestions as to where we might donate these that would be great too.

I’ve posted this in the Essex group too in case anyone has any links to the Colchester Laceys.

Thanks
:-)

Ok so this is both brilliant and annoying ha!

I guess that assuming Leah Lockwood is Meleanor Prime, we can't assume that William Prime is actually her father given that she was born 4 years before her mother's marriage.

Would it also then follow that her surname at the time of marrying John Watts was most likely to have been Williams?

I've not been able to find a Williams marriage with any variations of her Christian name that matches a John Watts marriage record on the BMD register.
