In 1851 my family should have included

William Child, Head, 27, Draper, Stafford Acton Trussel
Annie Child, wife, 24, None, Stafford Old Hill
Elisha Henry Child, son, 4, None, Warwickshire Birmingham

I know they were living in Birmingham in 1852, but this family do not appear in the Warwickshire index.  A similar family do appear, but instead of Elisha Henry they have a 4 year old son Charles (see my earlier thread) and so may not be my family.  Therefore I am wondering if during the census they were back in their home county visiting inlaws.

Would someone with access to the Staffordshire index please look to see if they appear there?  I would really appreciate the help.

BTW - does anyone know where Clastill is?  It's apparently in Staffordshire, but  I can't find any mention of it anywhere, including GenUKI.

Thanks

Eric

Thanks again Kris.

You are right that I cannot be sure that the parents in the 1851 census are the same as "my" parents in the 1871 census (of which I already have the details), but the circumstantial evidence seems good.  Especially when you consider that I know "my" parents lived in Birmingham both before and just after 1851.  The only problem is the absence of Elisha Henry Child.  However, I will look elsewhere.

Thanks for the very prompt reply.  Unfortunately the index I have does not show a Henry Child of the right age in Warwickshire.  Its a puzzle.  i know he used the name Elisha Henry later in life, so I think that rules out Charles being a nickname.  I think I must conclude that this is not the right household, even though all the details for the parents match.

Unless Elisha was with relatives outside this region.  I believe his mother came from Staffs, Old Hill.  Can you see any entries in the Staffordshire index?

Thanks

Eric

I'm looking for Elisha Henry Child born Q4 1846 in Birmingham to William and Ann Child.

The following entries in the census index all have the same references, and so are presumably in the same household

William Child, 27, male, head, married, Tailor, Staffordshire, Acton Furnell
Ann Child, 23, female, wife, married, Staffordshire, Clastill
Charles Child, 4, male, son, Warwickshire, Birmingham
Alfred Child, 7m, male, son, Warwickshire, Birmingham

The references are Birmingham piece 2058, folio 460, page 9, film 0332120

The details for William and Ann exactly match all my records, but Charles and Alfred never appear in them.  The implied birth year for Charles is 1847.  This closely matches the details for Elisha Henry Child, who I know was born to William and Ann in Q4 1846 (volume 16 page 328) in Birmingham, but he is not mentioned in this census index.  They had another son (Enoch John) in 1852 in Birmingham, so are likely to have been in Birmingham or the area during the census of 1851.

Would someone please check the references above to see if there is any mention of Elisha Henry Child.  Is Charles his twin, and Elisha was omitted from the index?  If there is no mention would you please check for any mention of Elisha anywhere else in the vicinity?

Thanks

Eric
