Tony, Sluggy,
 I suggest you could look at the Irish census records for the property to get an idea of the living conditions at the time, if it's of interest,
 incidentally in 1911 census, Mr Millis and his family have moved to another location.

The property was approx under the h a in old youghal road in the posted since removed map (if you can legally view).

As regards the hotel and the block etc, it was demolished and a cinema was built in 1919/20 called the Bellevue however that was short-lived and was turned into a dance hall i believe circa 1928, but this closed and the Cameo cinema opened 1964 but was closed circa 1990, was demolished and the present form built. I suspect that 117 (177) was demolished in the original build.
present day view available on google maps next door to Belle Vue bar 175.

Sinann, that's the answer Garrison Hotel at 120 Barrackton is 179 old youghal Road on the 1901 census meanwhile our bootmaker Mr Geo. Millis with his family including daughter Susan 16 y/o referred to in my previous postscript resides at 177 old youghal road which of course was originally 117 Barrackton, now Bellevue Court. Back again , dog with a bone syndrome, something was annoying me about this location why why why  put a boot and shoe maker away from lots of customers? did i miss something, in my haste to look at guys directory for 117 I had just skipped over the other entries, so went back again  then i saw 5 vintners and a hotel, grocers post office etc so why put them away from either outside the barracks or down at where the next large gathering would be i.e. Dillons Cross. then another thought hit me i was told the P.O had moved  from the top NE corner of Military Road to its  present position, but the maps show a hotel near this area,  ;
so back to the directory, 120 Barrackton,  Hotel ,grocers  Post office etc owner MR Burke, one of the maps shows the hotel as the Garrison Hotel , with Post Office as part of a block beginning on the eastern corner of Military road extending on both sides of the corner, ok so next checked another directory 1884 and the owner of the Garrison hotel is a Mr. Burke, so the  property showing immediatly prior to 120 is 117 does this mean that 117 faces the barracks but is just "on" old youghal road, but O Y R continues at the number 180 Nw corner of military road.
Another check here  same directory Military road ;..... Cork barracks to Wellington road Richd Burke owner Garrison hotel , no numbers for hotel,  numbering starts then with Number 1. If this makes sense then 117 was opposite main gate of barracks to the left, the site now part of Bellevue Court apartments.
I will still to get all this confirmed if possible but that's all for now rgds John

 as an aside if your Ggrandfather birth document contains other births, you might note that just  below his there is a birth of a daughter to the bootmaker Mr. Mullis living next door in 118.
(118 is the number given not 117)

My father, grandfather and my great grandfather all lived off the old youghal road, the house was demolished circa 1960 by the council as were many others in the area due to do called sewage problems (the place is on top of a hill??). So many of the local population were tied into the barracks both pre and post 1920, my grand father served with 2nd RMF and Connaught Rangers, in both Gallipoli where he was shot and after recuperating was sent to the Somme, he was shot again when he returned home after the war by the black and fans and again survived, my great grandmother's brother was killed in Aubers Ridge 1915, and his brother served twice in the Boer wars, grandmother's father was on tour in Cork with the Kings Royal Rifle Corps when he met my greatgrandmother they married but then were moved to Portsmouth he died in Hasler military hospital aged 23 from typhoid before my grandmother was born. He was from Hastings, but I traced some years ago his family back to 1691 in Kent. So I have a small idea of what happens in army families. Will be back in touch if and when my historian friend makes contact, unfortunately can't try to catch up  with him in a pub. Rgds John

post script.    Just to add i checked the birth registers of another post showing 117 but the only thing of note was one of the births listed had the address shortened to low or lower road but only someone in Cork would know that this meant lower Glanmire road J

Hi Tony, more investigating , a sister site of Cork City libraries is called corkpastandpresent.ie  and on it I've found Guy's directory of Cork 1891 and on the street index it shows Barrackton page 258 below Mary ville cottages and Frankfield view Barrackton is numbered 114-130 and at 117 we have Mullis. C. Boot and Shoe maker. So 117 Barrackton existed, however on the corresponding Guys map Barrackton is shown on the roadway in front of the Barracks, and old youghal road to the east so I called yesterday afternoon to the area but the numbers start at 180 to the West of the main gate so no joy there the post office was just closed unfortunately but I called back today to visit, at Maryville cottages there is a gap and then more similar style cottages heading towards number 135 old Y road approach  where I expected 117 old Y road to be, so to me it looks as if they were demolished before 1901. Undaunted i headed to the post office where a lovely postmistress (a lifetime resident and her parents and grandparents) told me she never heard of 117 she checked the electoral register etc. and showed me a map of Barrackton (from her family album ) late 1880s with Barrackton written in the same position as your map but none of the newer houses built. So my original thought Is that 117 is gone and has been replaced, so unfortunately no photos. However I have a friend in the city library local history section and will ask him to check for me when I next meet him. Cheers and Ciao, J

Hi Tony, just to clarify, the area in the immediate vicinity of the "new barracks" was called Barrackton, it was an area not a street, Avenue or road, in my memory there was not one singular street or square that would have houses numbered over perhaps 50- 60 (but am open to correction as it is a childhood memory) however on the other hand Old Youghal Road or more correctly Youghal old Road started way to the east in the Mayfield district went through an area known as Dillon's Cross and then to the West became the main arterial road in Barrackton passing the entire South wall of the barracks and it's entrances. I have being doing some digging and it would appear that 117 should lie between Harringtons square and Dillons cross to the east of the barracks and on the south side of old youghal road, however on the digitised maps I've seen do not show the number 117, neither does a general search, there may have been some rebuilding in the immediate vicinity or it may be one of the properties that were burned down by the "Auxiliaries" ( Crown forces) on December 19/20 1920 during the burning of Cork, I will visit the area in the next fortnight and see if I can throw any light on the subject!. I am also amazed that your gfathers birth record doesn't give more info on the address, perhaps the street name was shortened or was "ditto as above" . If you could I would look back at this . I will check the 1901 census to see if 117 exists then cheers, J
