Family History Beginners Board / Saville family in Selby
« on: Sunday 27 August 17 20:18 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor of mine was Richard Saville, a brewer in Selby.  In 1791 he married Catherine Calvert in Selby Abbey, and he was buried in the Abbey in 1814.  His father is recorded as being John Saville.

Has anyone already come across Richard in their Yorkshire research?

Hi Mick

Not quite sure what prompted your first comment - I am not questioning in any way that Mary Brennan married William Ryan.

I am just trying to see if my great-grandfather's family are in anyway related to your family - it has not helped that I have been looking for the wrong parentage for William Brannan for so many years due to a mistake on his marriage certificate!

Hi Mick

Now this is interesting.

I half had the idea that William might be the younger brother of Michael.  On his marriage certificate of 1864, William's father is given as "Thomas Brannan, gardener, dec'd".  So far so good.  But as explained in my first email below, when I actually looked at the St Patrick's Parish Records his father is given as "William Brannan".  So I have a problem here.  I would like to believe the certificate but the actual records take precedence!

I really should talk to the GRO about this.

Patrick

Hi Mick

Michael had certainly died by 1891 as "Salina Bramman" is described as a widow in the census of that year.

Do you by any chance have a copy of Michael and Selina's wedding certificate from 1861.  If so, can you tell me the name and description of his father?

Regards

Patrick

Hi Mick

Thank you for getting back to me.

Well at least our ancestors come from the same part of Leeds!

What I couldn't find was any census references for "your" Mary Brennan and her father Michael.  Have you managed to trace them in the 1881 or 1891 censuses?

Regards

Patrick

Yes

Quite understandable, but very annoying for modern day researchers!!

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me.

Interestingly, nowadays we use "Brennan" but my great-great-grandfather mostly used "Brannan" or once or twice "Brannon".

William's wife was Bridget Roan or Rowan.  She was born in "Athlone, Co Roscommon" according to the English census records.  Her parents were William Roan/Rowan and Ann Highgo (?sic)  - her mother's odd maiden name been taken from the birth certificates of her siblings who were born in England.

Patrick

Thanks for replying, Shane.

The big problem, of course, is that we are just not sure where William was born - or even in which county!  The English census returns say "Co. Meath, Ireland", my late father always swore blind we came from Co. Kilkenny, and my cousin says his father said we come from Co. Roscommon.  None of this is very helpful!!!

William died in 1920.  I don't think they even keep NI or state pension records going back that far.

Would strongly recommend TNG!!
