City Library has old directories, maps and electoral registers. If you are a library member, it may be possible to access online resources such as Findmypast/British Newspaper Archive also.

I accessed the film of Parish Marriages today at North Shields library:

John Edward Smith, age 25, Coal Fireman, or Teemer?, of 48 Rudyerd St. Father Thomas Thompson Smith, a Plater Married Christiana Peacock age 21, of 50 Norfolk Street, father Briton Peacock, a Tailor. Witnesses were: Edwin Hopper and May Hart Peacock.

Hi Michael,

Lots of people living in Milburn (or Milbourne) Place got married in South Shields.  Simple really ... it only took a ferry to get across (currently 7 minutes) and would have taken far longer to get all the way up to Christ Church if they were C of E.  Quite a few of mine did it, too :)
