Armed Forces / Grandfather in the BOER war.
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 00:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have been unable to find a trace of my great grandfather in the 1901 census.  He was born in 1875 and would have been age 25 when the census was done.  I found 4 other Robert Fyfe's in Scotland's People and requested a copy of each but none of them proved to be him.  He did not marry until 1902 and had previoulsy been on the census records with his parents Edward and Agnes.  I happened to mention this to a workmate and she suggested that he may have been in the BOAR war.  Can anyone advise me how I could check if he was in this war and how I would get information from a possible military record.  Would this also tell me if received a medal?  Any help would be greatly appreciated as there is nothing on Scotland's People which is the site I generally use.   ;D

Lanarkshire / Identifying a specific census district in Glasgow in 1861
« on: Monday 21 November 11 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please advise which Census District would have covered Miller Street in Glasgow in the 1861 Census.  This is just off Argyle Street.  I'm not from the area and I have a possible 23 people to view on Scotland's People.   I don't mind paying to view the records but I'm going to have my own set of Census records at this rate.  HELP.   Many Thanks in anticipation.    ;D

Lanarkshire / Re: HELP WITH OLD STREET MAPS IN TOLLCROSS (GLASGOW)
« on: Sunday 09 October 11 15:38 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the link Hibee but still not having any luck. The maps for Old Monkland see to be miles away from Tollcross and don't allow you to zoom out any further than the actual map cover.  It doesn't seem to matter which of the the 3 maps I use.  I also typed in Tollcross but it didn't recognise the name.  I know that the street existed as I have a copy of the marriage certificate and the street is also listed in the attached link.

Thanks for trying anyway.

Lanarkshire / Help with old street maps in Tollcross (Glasgow)
« on: Sunday 09 October 11 14:14 BST (UK)  »
I am currently trying to find old street maps of Tollcross in Glasgow/Lanarkshire.  My husband's grandfather was recorded as living at 23 Dandy Row, Tollcross, Old Monkland when he married on 17th July 1896.
I am struggling due to the boundries between Glasgow and the area which was previously classed as Old Monklands / Lanarkshire.  This was the link  I used from a previous Rootschat posting but I have not had much luck.       http://maps.nls.uk/os/2nd_ed_list.html
I know he was a miner and am assuming that he lived in mining houses.  Can anyone help me?

Hi Sticky Toffee,

You didn't state when your Alicia Sands was born but didn't know if you had looked in the Ireland Census of 1901.  It makes quite interesting reading.  It is really a shame that the records before this census are really vague.  Could the above link possibly lead you to your Alicia Sands?  If you click on the 'Show More Information' box then you will see that both listed were widows and the head of the household.  I would be interested to know if she is one of the 2 who were listed.  As for your Your Edward O'Hare, I think you could be looking for a while as there were loads of them listed.  I will keep in touch to see if there is a link between your family and mine.  I know that the O'Hear / O'Hair / O' Hare family went to America (Boston I think) in the 1930's and I also think that they may hold the key the where in Ireland the family originated from.  I have sent a message to someone on Facebook as a longshot but have not had a reply as yet.  (Won't hold my breath on that one but you never know!!)  I feel that I would probably get more information if I registered in Ancestry for the full package as this gives you gobal access to overseas records including passenger lists and Naturalisations in USA.  I may sign up to this when I am feeling a bit more flush and the trail starts to dry up.  Good luck with your search anyway.

My 6x gf Andrew Christie died (probably happily) in the Foulford Tavern in Beath.
He was born in 1781 and died in 1865.  Is there anyone out there who knows where this tavern was situated?  Have tried lots of sites.  Also any one with connections pls let me know.

Are you from Fife or trying to trace family who lived in the area?  My mothers family were miners in this part of Fife.   Do you have any further information about the occupation of your 6x gf as the majority of the people who moved to or lived in the area were miners?  I have attached a few links which might help.

Technical Help / Re: Windows 7 / Family Tree Maker 2006 - compatibility problems
« on: Sunday 27 February 11 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
I would just like to say a very big THANKYOU to all you kind people who took the time an trouble to reply to my posting.   My laptop crashed last Sunday night and I couldn't get my Family Tree Maker to open.  I thought everything would be ok as I had backed up the work on disc.  I couldn't get this to open either and as it turns out my husband had me save all my hard work on a Rewritable audio disc and that is the reason why I have been unable to re-open it.  I have had my It literate daughter staying and she has managed to get the information on the disc to open on her laptop, however, as it has been backed up on a read only disc we have had to put all the date back in again manually.  It would have been so easy if wee coulkd have cut and pasted it all back on.  As is stands, we also had to re-insall Family Tree Maker back onto my laptop.  I am really pleased that I still have the original information to refer back to as I dumped all the hand written notes I had made at the beginning.  I would have been gutted to think that it was lost and gone forever.  I will be investing in a memory stick though.  I also e-mailed Ancestry's customer helpdesk in response to the posting from LIZZIE W and this is what I got back.  Perhaps it may be of some use in the future to another poor soul with limited IT skills like me.

Dear Carrie,

We appreciate your message.

Family Tree Maker 2005, 2006 and version 16 are compatible with Windows Vista and 7 provided they meet the following two criteria:

1. The computer is not a 64-bit operating system.
2. You've downloaded and installed our updater patch for that operating system.

Provided the first stipulation has already been met, we've included a link below from our Knowledge Base that should assist you in this matter.

Answer Title: Family Tree Maker 2005, 2006 & 16 Update for Windows Vista & Windows 7
Answer Link: http://ancestry.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ancestry.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2777

If your computer is a 64-bit operating system, you will need to upgrade to a newer version of the software. More information on the current version of Family Tree Maker can always be found at http://www.familytreemaker.com.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

Technical Help / Windows 7 / Family Tree Maker 2006 - compatibility problems
« on: Monday 21 February 11 00:23 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please, please help me.  Got a new laptop for Christmas with Windows 7.  Loaded my Family Tree Maker 2006 (version) and spent past 7 weeks building my family tree.  Backed this up on disc as a precautionary messure and seem to have lost everything and cannot seem to get the disc to open.  When I try to open the disc, I keep getting the message "The file you are trying to open is either write protected or not a valid Family Tree Maker file.  Change the file attributes or use a different file.  When I hit the retry button nothing happens.  (This is another language to me).  When I initially try to access the Family Tree Maker it states "Family Tree Maker 2006 has one or more drivers with known incompatibilities with this version of windows.  Please contact MyFamily.com to obtain a compatible version of the drivers prior to installing this softwear..   I tried to access this site but it seems to be similar to setting up a facebook account so I'm confused about where I'd get to the download drivers from.   When I try to open the disc on my home PC I get the message "Critical components are missing, please uninstall and reinstall Family Tree Maker.  Your date files have not been affected".  Does this mean that everything I stored on my family tree is OK.  I also have Norton 360 and I don't know if this has been causing my laptop to run slow and to make the Family Tree Maker go loopy.  I was having a lot of fun building my family tree and I'm now beginning to wish I'd just bought a notepad and pen.  If I ask my hubby to take another look at my computer, I'm sure we'll end up in the divorce court.  Any advice you can give a technophobe like me would be greatly appreciated.   :(  :(  :(   Carrie  :(  :(  :(

Hi Bruce,

Sorry, think you have mixed me up with Cornes....he is the one commenting on 'Ronald McDonald'

My ancestors mentioned in this thread are the McIsaac/ McKisaik family from Comrie, Perth.

Hope you find yours,

 Sheilah

Sheilah,

Have you researched McKissock as a possibility??  Just a thought when I read the second spelling you had for the name.  Do you know what the occupation was for this person?
