Buckinghamshire / Re: Puddephatt family from Chesham,Bucks.
« on: Monday 17 April 17 16:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Haven't got much to contribute, but I just wanted to thank rjp1 for submitting the photo of George & Sarah Puddephatt and family. Sarah (nee Hearn) was a cousin of my Grandfather, so it's great to see another little branch of the family visually uncovered. Your suggested date of 1906 looks about right to me. I also have the 2 youngest children born in 1903 and 1904, and they certainly look around 2 and 3 years old in the photo.
I have quite a lot of info on the Hearn family if there is anything you need.
thanks again
Rich

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: Chesham Parish Register lookup - NASH

Hi Kate
Not sure if this is the one you want, but it's the only one I can find -

George Birch christened on 14th Jan 1798 (born 30th Nov 1797) at Great Berkhampstead, Herts. Father James Nash and mother Mary.

Great Berkhampstead was an area covering several villages close to Chesham such as Ley Hill, Botley and Ashley Green. Basically anything between Chesham and Berkhampstead.

Hope this helps

kind regards
Rich

The Spenborough Guardian is on Fiche at Cleckheaton library...are you local to visit? I will be there sometime this week and able to have a look in their local section.
There is also the Spen Valley Advertiser that covers Heckmondwike.

The Prospect Hall is still there..its a hotel now.

Ady :)

Hi Ady
Appreciate your help. Unfortunately I don't live locally - I'm in Gloucestershire. I have made a note of the newspaper names however, and I will try contacting them directly.
Just a thought - are there any local museums you can suggest, that may have brass band connections?

Thanks
Rich

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Cleckheaton Victoria Prize Band
« on: Monday 02 May 11 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Can anybody shed some light on this for me please?

My grandfather played the cornet in brass/silver bands during his younger years (he later became a conductor). His name was Roderick John Macdonnell (b1876), and he lived in Heckmondwike around 1906-1911. I am trying to find out which band(s) he may have played in at that time.

I have already been in contact with several people connected to brass/silver bands in Yorkshire, without any positive results. However, one of them did provide me with a photo (press cutting dated 1911) of the Cleckheaton Victoria Prize Band, and I think my grandfather may be one of the people in the photo. We are not 100% sure it's him, as we only have photos of him in later life, but there is a definite resemblance and the area and date are about right.

Does anyone have any information about this particular band? I have attached the photo, and indicated the person. He appears to be wearing a slightly different uniform to the others, so is he actually a member of the band?

Thanks
Rich

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 Census, Amersham - Unity Smith
« on: Monday 21 February 11 15:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Bram
Re post by Tazzie: Definitely the Smiths from Botley, Chesham and NOT the Smiths from Amersham I would say.

I can’t find any reference to Latimer as part of her name though. Every reference (birth, marriage, census), is just Unity Smith (or later Unity Hewitt). Latimer is a village not far away, and the parish church there seems to have been a popular wedding venue at that time, (several of my family were married there). I would suggest this is perhaps where she got married to William, and the name has somehow become attached.

I have found some additional children for Unity and William.
Frederick (b1870)
George (1873)
Ernest (1877)
Anne (1883)

~~~~
My family also originate from Chesham, and I still have some relatives living there.
Although I am not directly related to this particular Smith family, I have a connection through the husband of one of my Aunts. His ancestral line comes down from Unity’s sister Ann Smith.
Kind regards
Rich
Buckinghamshire / Re: Where is Tyrfield? Please, help!
Hi Donna
Just found this site -
http://www.lutonparanormal.com/buckinghamshire/popups/turville.html
"Turville is a long thin village at the bottom of a deep valley which has a long association with film crews. On top of the hill overlooking the village is Turville Windmill which was the home of Caractacus Potts in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, also has some notoriety as it appears in the TV series The Vicar of Dibley.
Over the years the village has had various names including Therfield, Tyrefield and Tyrefold and in the Domesday Book Tilleberie. The name is believed to derive from the Old English words thyrre and feld which mean ‘dry open land'. In the 2001 census the population was 317."
Looks as though it's definitely Turville you're after.
Rich
Hi Bram
I realise your post is a little old, and you may have sorted everything out by now, but I'm a new member here and only just came across it.
My family tree contains a Unity Smith from the Botley / Tylers Hill area of Chesham. The details I have are as follows –
Unity Smith (Aug 8th 1849 – Sep 1929) is the daughter of John & Mary Smith (nee Atkins). Six other children in the family – Sarah Ann (b1832), Elizabeth (1834), Ann (1836), William (1841), Henry (1843), and James (1846).
Unity married William Hewitt (b1848) on Sep 28th 1869, and they had a son William (b1874). William married Jane Elizabeth Burgin (b1873) on Dec 25th 1893
If you are looking for more information, please let me know and I may be able to help.
Kind regards
Rich
Buckinghamshire / Re: Abel Mead
« on: Monday 31 January 11 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Andrea
Only just spotted your post (I'm a new member).
I may be able to help a little. Here's what I have -
Abel Mead (1807-1876), was my great great grandfather. Born in Chesham, and married in 1827 to Eliza Atkins (1805-1868), also born in Chesham.
I have Abel listed as having a brother William (b1812), and a sister Sarah (b1804). Their parents are (I think), William Mead (b1780) and Sarah (b1780). Sarah's maiden name unknown.
Abel & Eliza had 8 children (all born in Chesham), Sarah (b1829) William (1831), Ann (1834), Edwin (1837), Thomas (1840), Eliza (1842), Abel (1846), and Stephen 1851).
Of course there could be other children, and some of these dates might not be 100%, but hopefully this may be of some help to you.
My main sources are Ancestry and historical family information.
kind regards
Rich
I have a William Parker Boyd (my 2x great grandfather), who I think was born sometime around 1815 in Ireland, although not sure exactly where. He had 2 brothers, James Parker Boyd and John Boyd, but I have no information on their parents.
Just wondered if there may be a connection ?
