Hi KatC

You're amazing in the hints you keep coming out with, as is Janet666! I hope to be able to contact the Lurgan Presbyterian Church & Shankill Church to search for further info, but is obviously difficult from Australia.

I have a little bit of info on the Whitesides, but probably nothing more than you've already tendered in this forum:

Sarah Bingham (b: 29 Nov 1829) married, 3 Feb 1850, Samuel Whiteside (b: abt 1829)

By all means, if there are records you are chasing in Australia I can find them in return, but when it comes to Ireland it is all a bit amiss!

From the info in this thread plus some extra research, I have been able to link alot of Bingham's from Lurgan that I've been unable to link to my family as yet. However, given it's the same town & many of the members of this family are bootmakers, there has to be a common connection with my family. The tree is as follows:

Thomas Bingham (unknown birth or death, unknown spouse)
    - Clements Bingham (b: 1845, d: ?)
           - m: Sarah Hill (b: 1844, d: pre-1890) on 22 Apr 1867
                   - Ellen (Elizabeth) Bingham (b: 7 Jan 1876, d: ?)
                          - m: William John Mahaffrey (b: 1869, d: ?) on 4 Oct 1910
                   - Sarah Jane Bingham (b: 1885, d: ?)
                   - Deborah Bingham (b: 1887, d: ?)
                          - m: Joseph Fisher (b: 1884, d: ?) on 9 Apr 1910
           - m: Elizabeth Leyton (b: 1867, d: ?) on 31 Jan 1890
                   - Mary Bingham (b: 1892, d: ?)
                   - Margaret Bingham (b: 1894, d: ?)
                   - Manford Clements Bingham (b: 16 Aug 1896, d: ?)
    - Thomas Bingham (b: 1847, d: ?)
           - m: Eliza Fryers (b: 1848, d: ?) on 24 Oct 1868
                   - George Bingham (b: 31 Oct 1868, d: ?)
                   - Elizabeth Bingham (b: 26 Mar 1874, d: ?)
    - James Bingham (b: 1851, d: ?)
           - m: Matilda Pendleton (b: 1853, d: ?) on 8 Apr 1871
                   - William Bingham (b: 1878, d: ?)
                   - Alexander Bingham (b: 1882, d: ?)
                   - Jane Eliza Bingham (b: 1886, d: ?)
                   - Robert Bingham (b: 1887, d: ?)
                   - Joseph Bingham (b: 1895, d: ?)

Thanks for the great info, KatC...that seriously helps put things into persepctive!  Do these birth dates come from the physical parish records themselves, as I have tried in the past to locate dates/names etc through sites like rootsireland but have never been successful?

I found a listing on familysearch:

https://www.familysearch.org/s/recordDetails/show?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fpilot.familysearch.org%2Frecords%2Ftrk%3A%2Ffsrs%2Frr_374854275%2Fp1&hash=HloWXpZgU9zB10k5M56iYku8TUc%253D

that lists the death of a Clements Bingham in 1890, born about 1830.  As has been the pattern in my Bingham tree, one child out of each generation has been named Clements, however this hasn't shown up yet in Robert's (Clement's son's) generation.  A birth year of 1830 would put this listed Clements within a few years of Clements snr's (m: Sarah Black) other children. Also, he is most likely the Clements named in the newspaper article from Otago I linked in an earlier post.  Is it possible he is Clements/Sarah's son as well??

Hi Janet

Thank you once again for all the fantastic information! Given that there are not *too* many Binghams, I'm going to try & draw the connections between them all...which hopefully won't be too difficult. At least this should provide a comprehensive Bingham tree for the area.

The other info you provided on Clements Bingham also poses more questions - the Clements Bingham in the 1841 English Census cannot be Robert's father, as Robert was born in 1834 (when this Clements would have been 13), & is not Thomas's son Clements (who was born in 1845). The immigration records have that particular Clements arriving in Brisbane (from Gravesend) in 1869 at age 10. The 1894 Slater's Directory is Thomas's son Clements, however the 1856 Henderson's Directory would definitely be Robert's father Clements.

Interestingly, Robert went on to have a son named Clements about 1857 (somewhere between Ireland & Australia whilst immigrating),& this son Clements went on to have his own son named Clements in Brisbane - the family definitely seemed to have a pattern of named their sons Clements.

Would still love anything on Clement's (Robert's father) direct family, siblings, parents etc. I have records of a James Bingham from Armagh (b: 1807, married Sarah Jane ---), who I am thinking could possibly be Clement's brother.  James had a daughter in Aramagh to Sarah Jane --- in 1838, named Eliza Jane Bingham. Eliza went on to marry James Townsley (b: 1832 to F: Thomas Townsley, M: ---) in Armagh on 21 Sep 1854. Eliza & Thomas subsequently emigrated to Australia with Eliza passing away in 1903 in Queensland & James the same year (listed on Qld death certificate without parents, but born Ireland aged 69? years).

Thank you, kingskerswell - this would be Elizabeth Bingham. I had her spouse down as William John Mahaffrey from the 1911 Armagh Census records (both living in the household of Clements Bingham), but had no idea of wedding date...very much appreciated!

Wow! Thank you so much for the speedy reply & extra information, Janet!  That has definitely filled a few gaps as far as Robert's siblings are concerned - interestingly, with regard to the Thomas Bingham I am chasing...his son Clements married a Hill (Sarah) as did Robert's brother William (Mary Jane), so possibility of a link there.

also, I found a link a while ago referring to a Clements Bingham, shoemaker, from Lurgan, that has to be Robert's father Clements, written in the "Otago Witness" published in New Zealand in 1890.  Given the flowery nature of the article, it may just be urban legend, but provides a bit of source regardless & may explain why Robert's mother is listed as Sarah - on his death certificate here in Australia:

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=OW18901009.2.162.3 (source starts half way through article).

Thank you again, & any further info much appreciated!

Armagh / Binghams in Armagh
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 02:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to locate further info on Bingham family members from Armagh.  So far, I have traced my line back to Robert Bingham (b. abt 1832, F: Clements Bingham, M: Sarah ---), who married Ellen (Eleanor) Singleton (b. abt 1835, F: Thomas Singelton, M: Ann Blakeney) on 14th Feb 1853 at the Shankill Church of Ireland, Lurgan, Armagh.

I would love any further info on either Robert or Clements (siblings etc) - I am aware that another Clements Bingham was living in Lurgan in the later 1800's through to early 1900's (b. abt 1845, F: Thomas Bingham, M: ---), who married Sarah Hill on 22nd Apr 1867 & remarried Elizabeth Leyton 31 Jan 1890 after being widowed.  Can anyone confirm is this Clements & his father Thomas fit into the above Bingham family?

Any help much appreciated!
