Family History Beginners Board / Re: John Duncannon - (Kaanan)?
« on: Wednesday 27 June 18 22:25 BST (UK)  »
The John Kaanan who died in India in 1811 I think was too young to have been a father in 1802.  That leaves the question as to what happened to John and Jane Duncannon after the birth of their son Charles.  I’ve found no deaths in FreeBMD or FindMyPast.  If they went ‘home’ to Ireland, could anyone give me a few pointers about where to look?

Thanks

Thanks Jim, you saved me the cost of a certificate, I should have checked.  Radcliffe, many thanks too.  I think that St Mary's is Catholic but the baptism record that I checked is C 0f E.  The other spelling may be of help, so far I have Kaanan, Duncan, Duncannon, Domcannon, Dunkin, Donkin, etc, etc.  Onwards and upwards!

There is a private John Kaanan who died in India in 20 March 1811, HM Royal Regiment, maybe this is him?  Work to do.

Thanks again

Thanks Jim, I’m inclined to agree.  I have searched the usual suspects, Ancestry, FindMyPast, FamilySearch, etc. FreeBMD has just one death for John Duncannon in Wolverhampton in 1854, that’s feasible on the assumption that John was about 25 in 1802, I’ll get the death certificate.  No such luck with Jane.  My knowledge of military research is non-existent, is there anywhere that I should specifically look?

Family History Beginners Board / John Duncannon - (Kaanan)?
« on: Friday 22 June 18 17:17 BST (UK)  »
Looking for help please.  My 3 x great grandfather was Charles Duncannon.  He was born in 1802 in Pickering, Yorkshire (census records).  He married his first wife in 1825, she died and Charles remarried in 1844.  His second marriage certificate states that his father was John Duncannon, occupation soldier.

I have found a baptism record for Pickering in 1802 for Charles, son of John Kaanan (Irishman) and Jane.  This could be a transcription error especially if the information was given verbally.  So, if this is the correct baptism, what was the real surname and where do I look now?  Charles's son later shortened his name to Duncan.

I have looked for siblings of Charles and drawn a blank.  Any help would be much appreciated.

The Common Room / Re: Thomas Nicholson
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 17:20 BST (UK)  »
Have just found some more information.  Thomas's wife Florence was killed in Surrey Lodge, Lambeth by a V2 bomb 4 January 1945 where she was visiting her daughter Eva (born 1914 - married name Skinner). Florence is describe as the widow of Edward T Nicholson - this is possibly a transcription error.  In any event, it looks like Thomas died sometime between 1919 when he was discharged from the Royal Engineers and 1945.  None of the age at deaths for this period on FreeBMD seem to tally with the year of birth.  Inching closer but it's a long frustrating process.

Eva also died in the air raid however, her son Edward survived.

The Common Room / Re: Joseph David Brenner

Hi There,

Joseph David Brenner was my father's cousin.  Joseph's mother Eva was my grandfather's sister.  Joseph and his wife Irene had three daughters who are my second cousins.  Ideally, I would like to trace them.  Any information you have would be great.

I have a few photos of Joseph as a young man, he is dresed I think in a Cossack outfit.  I traced the family to Chiswick in 1947 when the youngest daughter was born - after that I cannot find anything.

Best Regards

David

Hi Valda
I did get a member of the East Yorkshire FHS to look for me a while ago but no luck there, not sure if I know where to look.  One of the witnesses on the marriage cert was an Ellen Sleightholm and I tried this avenue but drew a blank.

Regards
