The Common Room / Re: Martin Wade-Kilkerrin

There is a photo of Martin Wade and his wife, Ellen O'Brien in the "albums" on my Facebook page. He died during WW2 in his 80s. A gifted man with his hands, he erected the new-fangled steel haysheds, mended clocks and watches, hived bees, introduced poured concrete construction of gate-pillars etc. He repaired bicycles for people, although he was too old to learn to ride one when they came to North Galway. He did the shopfitting for many local pubs, building the counters on site, although sadly, he was often paid with drink. Virtually a teetotaler in old age.

Glad that you got a laugh. Hugh is remembered as a small man with red eyes.I wonder if his son Martin was my grandfather? The dates seem to fit. Are you on Facebook? You can find me there, I live in Kingswood, Clondalkin, Co. Dublin, Ireland.

Hiya! Martin Wade here. My father, who was a storyteller in the ancient tradition, had many stories about Hugh Wade . He worked on the deepening of the Manchester Ship Canal. The contracter costed the job by laying sovereigns edge-to-edge along the bank, for instance. A Jewish gentleman approached Hugh in a panic, asking how he was to cross the canal. (The bridges had been removed during the widening process.) Hugh's response was; "Swim it, you f***er, the man that walked it, ye killed him........

Hi.
My name is Martin Wade. My ancestors came from the Kilkerrin area for many generations. My grandfather, also Martin Wade was married to Ellen O,Brien. They lived originally at Scregg West, about one mile south of Kilkerrin. He died around 1948. There was another cousin, Hugh Wade, (Hughdie) who also lived in Scregg West. My grandfather used to work in England every year near Chesterfield as a migrant farm worker. There were not many Wade families in that area of Galway at that time, or indeed at the present. To view the area on the old maps or from the air, check out (osi.mapviewer.shop)
Hope that this helps out the person seeking Wade ancestors in kilkerrin.
Regards, Sorcererflyer.
