Armagh / Owen Hughes Family
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 17:23 BST (UK)  »
Looking for information on Owen Hughes who married Mary McCoy abt. 1840. Owen born abt. 1820. They had 4 children, Mary, Patrick, John and my gg grandmother Annie Ellen. She came to America abt. 1873 and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as a house maid.  The family were from the area around (sp) Annahalia Townland, Killvery Parish, County Amaugh. I know there is a cemetery in the area where other Hughes are buried, but I have no idea who they are in relation to my family. The Hughes were Catholic. Any help will be greatly appreciated
Thank you

I have researched two things for Ann/Annie Hughes. I found a Passenger Manifest Record for what looks to be her coming from Ireland to the United States. This is the info on the manifest----------

Ship - Tuscarvia----Date - 15 June 1866 -------From - Liverpool --------To - Philadelphia

Name - Ann Hughes
Age - 19
Sex - F
Occupation - Servent-From - Ireland
To - United States with 2 boxes

I also had a  search initiated for Owen Hughes grave. They could not find his or his wife's but did find about 19 Hughes in grave yards in Killvey Parish. A few entry's give the townlands where the deceased lived. I can post this list if anyone needs the info. Now to find Annie's husband, James Rogan from Co. Down.

Well, I sent to "Irish World" grave records to find out if Ann Hugh's parents are buried in Killvey Parish or if the rest of the family might be buried there. Nothing back yet, but if this research comes through, it would mean that my search for the Hughe's family will come to a end. I don't think that there is much more in the line of records in Ireland past the early 1800's, if your family were just farmers etc. If I find out anything about the graves of the Hughe's, I will post the information in the hopes that it will help someone else.

According to one research site, my Hughes line stops at Owen. I think they have online sites and only go as far looking on the screen to research a name, could be wrong. Well, maybe now that I think about it, Owen lived in Annahaia and paid taxes there, his father might have lived there also. How much moving did they do in the early 1800's? Not sure of what kind of records there might be, but must be some cemetery's in the area that Owen and his fathers family could  possibly be buried in. Is there any records of cemeterys and those who are buried in them? Would there be any other avenues of research for this family? I don't feel like giving up just now as I have the Rogan's in Co. Down to look for. Any idea's out there? Thanks

I wish I did have a better photo, I really like the old photo's of the Irish. They look so intent. That is a photo that was sent to me by cousin's in New Eagle, Pa. I know that there must have been more photo's, but who has or had them. Like most, they were probably thrown out.  My side of the family, Neely's who I thought were German when I first started out researching 10 years ago,  are 100% Irish. I have found many pictures, but can't tell you where in Ireland they are from. As for the Rogan's, I will try to see if there is anyone in the family back in Pittsburgh that knows anymore. I haven't visited them in many years and the last of the Rogan daughter's family, just passed away before Christmas.
Thanks

Aghadowey, Patrick and Michael immigrated from Ireland and became police officers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am trying to trace them now. One other item that is from a history letter from one of the family back in Pittsburgh. James Rogan was to have mined coal under the Irish Sea. I don't know how that is done or if it is done. But could be a hint as to where the family might have came from. He was living with a aunt in Wales while digging coal. It is hard to trace James as he had a run in with a minister who was saying bad things about nuns and a altercation ensued. James had to leave Ireland on a freighter and get to America, as the police werer after him,  so he is really hard to trace thru the transcribers guild. All of this was in the little history that was sent to me.  I will look at the sites you mentioned in you last mail and see what I can find. This is not much, my only hope is to find a record that has Patrick Rogan and Kati Smith in it, or this is the end of my quest. I have sent the only picture of James Rogan that I have. Not in too good a shape.

Thanks again

Down / ROGAN of County Down

I am searching for my G Grandfather James Rogan from County Down. There isn't much information that I can give other than he immigrated to America in 1870 and went to Pittsburgh to live. There he met Ann Hughes from Armagh and married, raising 6 children one of which was my grandmother Rose. James had 2 brothers that I know of, Patrick, born Nov 1858 and Michael. I do not know his birth date. The parents of James were Patrick Rogan and Kati Smith. Kati is what the family in Pittsburgh has written to me, but her name could be Katherine/Catherine. Kati was born in County Down in 1824 and Patrick in 1822. The family is Catholic so the children must have been baptised. Not sure if there was a brith registration for the children. Any help that you can give will be greatly appreciated. I am hoping that I can trace the family a little farther back in time.

Thank you

Wow, that was a fast reply. The dates that I have for the baptism's are --

9 April 1840 for Mary of Owen Hughes and Mary McCoy
24 April 1842 for Patrick of "     ""         ""        ""
10 Dec 1844 for Ann of     "      ""         ""        ""
 1 Feb 1847 for Ellen of     "      ""         ""        ""
There is a John, but I have nothing on any dates for him.
All these dates are from Lower Killeavy Roman Catholic Records.

Armagh / HUGHES from Annahaia, Killevy

First, thanks for a great site and keeping it orderly. I have learned much form just browsing. Now for some help!
I am looking for information concerning a Owen Hughes, my GG Grandfather. I have found out that he paid the Tithe in the Townland of Anahay (Annahaia) Killevy Parish in 1835. I am thinking that this is where he lived and raised his family of 13. My GG Grandmother Ann is listed in the Lower Killevy R C Church baptisms 1835 - 1900 to a Ownn Hughes and Mary McCoy. There are two Hughes listed and only one is a Hughes/McCoy family, so that makes me pretty sure that this is my family.  Also, three other children are listed, Patrick, Mary and Ellen Hughes who are on the baptism records. A John Hughes who is one of the children, is not. He immigrated to America before Ann did.  Is there any way to find out who the rest of the childen are? Are there any records etc. of Owen Hughes or Mary McCoy's parents?
I have seen what the site members can do in searching and I hope that my family is not to obscure for help. Once again, thank you for a great site and I do appreciate any help that you can give. I would hope I could return the favor. I am attaching the only picture I have of Ann Hughes

Thank you
