Hi CaroleW,

Her living great niece came to Australia in the 1950's. She recalls her great Aunt Martha being still alive in the 1940's but as just a small child at the time cannot remember her surname.

This is a summary of what I have found about Alfred John Levey.

ALFRED JOHN LEVEY was born 28 April 1855 in Montreal. Canada. He went to England and married Jeanette Flora Davidson in 1878 at Islington. Their first child, Esther (known as Estella Flora) was born in 1879 at Islington. They then went to South Africa when John was born about 1883 and Gertrude was born about 1884. After returning to England they had the following children. Edward born in 1886 at Islington, Gabriel Henry born in 1887 at Islington, Sophia Marie born in 1889 at Hackney and Henry John born in 1890 at Edmonton.

Alfred John Levey came to Australia and led a bit of a 'dodgy' life. In early July 1892 he suddenly left his watchmaker and jewellery business in Orroroo. South Australia. (Adelaide Observer SA. 30 July 1892). In October 1893 he left his watchmaker and jewellery business in Kilmore. Victoria again without notice. (Kilmore Free Press. Thursday 19 October 1893).

In February 1894 he and Ida Maud Thomas had a child in Queensland. Alfred Levey opened his watchmaker and jewellery shop in High St. Strathalbyn. South Australia in October 1898.
He was married 9 November 1898 in Adelaide. South Australia to IDA MAUD THOMAS.

Alfred and Ida left Strathalbyn and went to Tasmania sometime after May 1900 where they had several more children.  Alfred Levey lived as Frederick Lawrence during the time they were in Tasmania.

In 1909 his daughter, Estella placed advertisements in Australian Newspapers looking for him. She said he had lived in London and South Africa and she now believed he may have came to Australia.

They were in Sydney by 1915. (birth of daughter). Alfred sometimes used the name Stanley Levee. (NSW BDM's 1915 birth of his daughter and other newspaper reports in 1918 relating to passing valueless cheques).
Alfred John Levee died 30 June 1933 at his residence, 24 Leonard Avenue, Kensington. Sydney aged 78 years. No parent's names were recorded on his death certificate.
The New South Wales Index to Deceased Estate Files shows him as a Retired Jeweller.

It would appear Alfred John Levey's brother Joseph Edwin Levey born in 1850 in Montreal came to Australia. He died in 1917 at Paddington. NSW. His death record shows John and Gertrude as his parents.

(a locality just south of Orroroo) South Australia to parents Thomas Thomas and Ada Elizabeth Winfield married in South Australia in 1865. Thomas Thomas died 25 May 1883 at Saltia. SA aged 39 years and Ada Thomas died 3 December 1914 in Adelaide aged 68 years and 8 months.

Hi Jamjar, Thank you for all your detailed research. An article on Trove mentions him leaving Orroroo SA in July 1892 under interesting circumstances. He then had a son in Queensland in 1894 with Ida Maud Thomas who was born near Orroroo in 1875. They eventually returned to SA and married in 1898. I think it is reasonable to assume he had a 'past' when he went to Tasmania. kind regards, Geoff.
