Sligo / McGowans, Callaghans, Regans from Sligo
« on: Saturday 20 December 14 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings!

My great-great grandparents James McGowan (1846-1888) and Mary Ann Elizabeth Callaghan (1849?-1913) were from Ballymote. After James had died in 1888, Mary remarried John Regan. I do not have any more information regarding him/them.

Does anyone have more information of these folks? Parents? siblings?

thanks!

Steve

Galway / McGagh's and Dalys near Milltown / Banagher
« on: Saturday 20 December 14 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings

Does anyone know of any relations between the McGagh's and Daly's of the Banagher / Milltown area? My Daly ancestors are from Banagher, as far back as possibly the 1840/1850's. Not sure of they have been there longer, or if they were from neighboring areas, or county Mayo.

Many thanks

Steve

Galway / Re: Rodden, Hogan, Burke of Clonfert

Would be interested in hearing from anyone researching Hogans Dalys Burkes or Roddens of Clonfert parish, Banagher Co Galway.

I can take the Burkes back to Lenamore Clonfert where Mary Burke lives in 1850s. They later lived in Killaltenagh, Banagher. Dalys also lived there.

The Roddens lives in Kilmacshane, Banagher.

The Hogans lived in Kilnaborris.

The above information is from Griffiths Valuations of 1856.

greetings--- i am posting a few years later, but have strong interest in the Burkes and Dalys. I have a great grandfather, Patrick joseph Daly, born in 1880 in Banagher, County Galway, to a John Daly and Bridget Faragher. Looking for more inf on them (as in ancestors of John and Bridget.

I also come to understand that at the Daly farm on Banagher Rd that a Jim Burke came to live there (from Kilconly), because he married an "adopted" child of the Daly's (i think the name was "Una McGach"--- i have a feeling i am really messing up the name), and lived there as Jim Burke-Daly.

does this ring any bells for you? Is there a link between our info?

Many thanks,

Steve

hello- not sure if there is any relation or not, but my greaat-great grandfather, John Daly, lived in Banagher, County Galway during the 1850's, on though at least 1911. I believe his father was a Patrick Daly.

any chance there might be a connection?

Galway / Re: trying to find "St. Joseph's Church, Miltown"- Daly/Faragher

Carol / ger--- thanks for the info.

just got back from my 8 day trip to Ireland. Beautiful country; BEAUTIFUL people.

I found the Daly homestead in Banagher, and confirmed with the online Griffiths valuation map of Banagher Rd in Banagher. I even actually spoke to a John (might be Jim) Greany, who was a grandson of Michael Greany (who was the godparent of my g-grandfather, in 1880). He confirmed the Dalys lived there. He said there was a Jim-Burke Daly who still lives there (he's in his 90's), but says he isn't a Daly. He's a Burke, and he married a woman (Una McGach? spelling(?)), whowas taken in by the Dalys, since she no longer had family. He apparently moved to the Daly homestead, and took the hyphenated name to not confuse the Post when they would deliver his mail.  If you, or others possibly know more about this, please let me know.

I went to Russelstown, and confirmed that there are currently still two Farragher families still there. From the Church birth register in Milltown, Bridget Farragher, the mother of Patrick Daly, was from Russelstown. Just not sure which family, and how it all links up.

So here's what i have:
My gr-grandfather is Patrick Joseph Daly (1880-1918), born in Banagher, per the St. Joseph's church records.
His parents are John Daly and Bridget Faragher, per the church records. Brridget is from Russelstown, per the church records.
In the Griffiths valuation (how do i find the year of thr valuation?), i find a Patrick Daly living in lot 6 in Banagher--exactly where John and Patrick Joseph come from. So... could this Patrick be the father of John, anf grandfather of Patrick Joseph? How would i go about finding more info, now that i am back home in the US? Can you access the national archives online, or do you actually have to go there?

Thanks, Steve

*********************EDIT
...correction: the record i have of John Dalys' wife, Bridget, being from Russelstown, may be incorrect. I have no record that says she is from Russelstown. It is so close to Milltown, and the priest knew of Farahers in Russelstown, i may have put those facts together and made this assumption. she may or may not be from Russelstown. I am assuming John Daly (patrick's father) was married around 1860 (first child 1861). Can someone assist me on finding a marriage record of John and Bridget?

thanks, Carol.

I have a feeling this is them, but i find it odd that john states that he is 71 on the 1911 census, but on the 1901 census, he shows 59. Normal discrepeancy?

Also, i know that John married Bridget Faragher, and the closest Faragher i find in Griffith's valuation is in Abbeyland North, near Dunmore. It looks to be about 10km apart---would this seem out of the ordinary for them to meet, possibly around 1840-1850? Not sure about their movement/migration patterns.

I think i actually found it. There is a Banagher right next to a Miltown in County Galway, Doonbally DED, Liskeevy Parish). the names on the 1901 census records match up with Patrick's parents, and there is a Greany family right next to him. A Michael Greany was a sponsor at his baptism.

I'm going to dig into this one. This might be him. I believe there is a St. Joseph church in this Milltown as well.
