Thanks for the response.

No, he definitely left the Merchant Marine in some manner and the next time I can find any info he was employed as an Engineer/Surveyor with an insurance company in England. I can only assume that he was invalided out and was classified unfit for active duty as he was only 29.

Family History Beginners Board / Cessation of Service, Merchany Navy - Form CSR8

G'day folks

Still researching my father Duncan Clark, Marine Rngineer with Clan Line up to Oct 1940.

I have his Continuous Certificate of Discharge (No. R178567) which ends on 16/10/1940 when he signs off the "Berwickshire" and then disappears from the land of printed records. There are no further entries or marks on the card

It has been suggested that he was invalided out, in which case I would have expected to find a Form CRS8 or other record of his movement. I have looked at the documents in the National Archive and Southampton Archives but can find no trace of him or the form CRS8.

Can someone please enlighten me about form CRS8 and where it can be found ?

Buteshire / Archie Clark - Millport
« on: Thursday 05 May 11 06:36 BST (UK)  »
G'dday,
I'm trying to get some background on my grandfather Archibald Clark, born Millport 1880, died Millport 1948. He was a merchant seaman and served in the RN in WW1. He is described on his death certificate as a "Cemetery Superintendent", presumably in Millport where he lived.
On my father's (Duncan Clark) marriage certificate Archie is described as a "Ships' Master". I believe that this may relate to times in the 1920's /30's when he was a yacht or inshore vessel skipper, not an ocean or coastal ship master.
Can anybody with a long memory advise or point me in the right direction. (I have tried the usual research avenues, National Archives etc.)

Thanks Jimmy

I thought that could be the case. The only thing against it is the low numbers.

Good Morning

In looking through the piece of my father's continuous discharge certificate that I have, I note that the column headed "Copy of Report of Character" is filled in with a rubber stamp reading, for example, "VERY B103 GOOD" vertically.

Can anybody enlighten me as to the meaning of the number B103 or B79.

Reference to the ship served on ?

Thanks for that.

You are correct.

He was placed, presumably by the Ministry of Labour (as far as I know) as a Engineer/Surveyor with a large insurance company , inspecting boilers and other equipment, a job he stuck at until retirement.

Good Morning Hugh

Many thanks for your quick response and information.

I had Kew search 382/326 with no result. I know that Duncan was invalided out in 1941-1943. The last trace I have is on "Berwickshire" in Birkenhead for a week in October 1940 where he was signed on as "Ex 2nd/3rd Engineer" (depending on where you look). He left that ship with several others also signed on as extras including two masters (presumably being transported elsewhere).

I surmised that he may have then transferred to another Clan Line or associated company vessel. By using movement cards from Kew, I  found out that "Harmodius" and "Clan Ogilvy" both sailed from Liverpool around the same time as "Berwickshire" and both were torpedoed on their return voyage to UK. My next step will be to ask Kew to look at those crew lists.

I have a copy of Duncan's Continuous Certificate of Discharge, given to me by Duncan's daughter (my half sister - recently discovered). The last entry is for "Berwickshire" with the description "intended foreign" against the voyage description.

Once again, my thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Merchant Navy records WW2 - CLARK

I've been tracing my father's history for about five years. I was adopted in WW2 after my mother died and my father (in the MN) was unable to care for me. His name was Duncan Clark (R178567) and he was a Marine Engineer with the Clan Line and associated fleets. I have traced him to October 1940 in Liverpool where he left one vessel (SS Berwickshire) and, we assume, boarded another. Not certain, as his discharge certificate ends there and no further trace is available in the Fourth or Fifth Registers of Seamen. He survived the war, having been torpedoed (we believe) and invalided out. It would appear that he may have left Liverpool on either the Clan Ogilvy or the Harmodius, both torpedoed on return voyage in 1941.
My question is (after all that) does the NA hold crew lists for vessels sunk or did the list go down with the ship ? I live in Australia and have had several crew list searches done by NA which has proved expensive so I'm reluctant to commission another which may have no possible result.
Or does anybody know of a source for lists of survivors.

Regards
