World War Two / Re: Dad's Court Martial

It did support my dad's weight - he was left hanging and had to be lifted off.  After it was straightened he says you could not tell it had been damaged!

Thanks for all your help so far.  Here are some other entries in his Pay Book that might give further clues:

On 21 August 1945: Relinquished appointment as Lance Corporal on ceasing to perform duties
On 20 September 1945: Admitted to Military Hospital, Campbell College, Belfast
On 28 September 1945: Discharged from hospital (acute right maxillary Sinusitis)
On 24 October 1945: Reappointed Lance Corporal - this was the day after the "Priv Leave" entry

It was a proper court martial

Dad was 28 in 1945.  He was not discharged from the Army (Royal Welch Fusiliers) until 3 April 1946.  He was a clerk at the Shrewsbury Record Office and responsible for producing discharge papers for the troops.

I don't think it can be 48 hours as the dates show as 10/10/1945 to 23/10/1945

World War Two / Decipher entry in Dad's Army Pay Book
« on: Saturday 17 October 15 16:48 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to work out what the last entry is in my Dad's Army Pay Book that lists the "nature of leave".  I can make out that it says "Priv Leave" (Privilege Leave) but I cannot make out the rest of the sentence.  Can anyone help please?

World War Two / Dad's Court Martial
« on: Saturday 17 October 15 16:29 BST (UK)  »
My Dad was subjected to a court martial during WW2 because he accidentally bent his bayonet (when alighting from a troop-carrying truck his bayonet hanging from his waist caught in the gap between the lorry and the tailgate).  I was surprised that as it was accidental it went as far as a court martial.  Fortunately, the Quartermaster Sergeant spoke up for my Dad and said he could straighten the bayonet (which he subsequently did) so the case was dismissed.

Can anyone tell me which of the King's Regulations would have applied?

What do you mean by oversketched.  Do you think these are more painted than photo enlargements as we kniow them today?

My relatives in Montana have sent me copies of two photos that my Great Aunt Elizabeth took with her when she immigrated to the USA in 1898.  I think they could be her mother and father who would have been 52 and 56 respectively in 1898.  Based on their clothing and picture style can anyone offer any suggestions as to the likely date of these pictures?

United States of America / Re: Elizabeth Roberts then Henderson

WOW - a big big thankyou to Sandra for all the information (and Shellyesq).  It just goes to show that information passed down that you believe to be accurate may not always be so.  I don't think any of our current family are aware of Elizabeth's marriage to a John Windle and that he was probably the violent and abusive alcoholic that my Great Aunt told me about (all these years we have been referring to her husband Roberts as the black sheep).  It is interesting that she was still married to William H Roberts when she was 58 years.  I wonder when she married Henderson (if indeed she did)?

Thanks also for the information on Robert Jones born March 1850 in Llaneliden, Wales.  I see he was widowed in 1900.  All I know of him (as passed down) was that he married in Escondido California and had only an adopted son called Howard 'Jenkins'/Jones.  If you can find any more information on him I would be most grateful.
