East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Gamekeeper - Moyes/Lidgate Yester area 1850s
« on: Sunday 13 August 06 11:17 BST (UK)  »
Bits of information collated over the years have led me to believe that JOHN MOYES (born Collessie, Fife 1839) was a gamekeeper in the Yester area during the 1850s.

There are links to the LIDGATE family, who appear on the 1841 census living in Church Street, Yester.

QUESTION - Were there any stately homes/estates in the area that may have employed a gamekeeper? Would he be on record anywhere?

Any information or links to where I could look next will be gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Gill

Hi again
I have James birth certificate and his parents marriage certificate, but no clues from either as to Margarets birthplace.
I will try the St James the Less register for the baby girl, she may not have survived to the 1881 census, so the only confirmation would be to find a common address or her mothers maiden name. This is new information for me to check, thanks.

Hi
thanks for responding to the query.
I think that Daniel is the Donald marrying Mary Ann Scott in Aberdeen as all the other details of their children fit in with what I have already.
This has been a big leap forward in the research, thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response.
Margaret is on the 1891 census, but again states her birthplace as Scotland. I think the English enumerators didnt have to be specific when the place of birth was not an English county.

The only son found has been James born in Liverpool in 1865. Margarets father was John Lidgate and John Moyes father was Alexander.

Quite how they ended up in Liverpool is unknown as John Moyes is described as a gamekeeper....not a lot of call for that near their address which was effectively the Dock Road!

Thanks again
Gill

Hi Dorothy
Thank you for taking the trouble to do all this.
I have Daniels birth certificate which gives his father Donald's occupation as salmon fisher. However, in 24 years I guess he could easily have retrained as a blacksmith!
The Austin/Ogston mothers name could also have been a misinterpretation if accents were very thick, and once it was written in the register (assuming they could read) it would be to late to point out any errors.
Ellen Jane did have an older sister, Mary Ann and younger sisters Janet and Sarah born in the  places you say, so I am inclined to think that your assumption that the two older girls were born with the surname Scott. This would also explain why I have never been able to trace them before.
If you still have access to this marriage certificate, and if it does not incur any expense on your part, I would be grateful for a copy.

Margaret Lidgate (b.1837 in 'Scotland' according to info given on 1881 census).
She married John MOYES of Collessie in Liverpool in 1859 and gave her fathers name as John LIDGATE.

I have been unable to trace her birth record or any other references to John Lidgate, so her mothers name remains a mystery.

Any ideas anybody?

Thanks for reading this,
Gill.

Aberdeenshire / TAYLOR Birth and Marriage

I have been searching in vain for the marriage of DANIEL TAYLOR (b.1840, Green of Murirton, Inverness) and MARY (surname unknown, although 1881 census says born in Aberdeen).

Their daughter Ellen Jane was born in Aberdeen in 1866 (calculated from later censuses) but I have been unable to find any birth record for her either.

Any ideas?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Gill.
