Sutherland / Re: Campbell Bruce Gunn Elder Sinclair in Sutherland, Scotland
« on: Friday 27 December 13 10:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone!

I am trying to find information on George Campbell born 1786 in Sutherland County and his wife, Janet Bruce, born May 14 1781 in Golspie, Sutherland.  Janet Bruce married George 'Sheorais' Campbell (b. 1786 in Sutherland) in Dornoch on Feb 28 1806.

Janet's parents (I believe) are William Bruce born May 10 1752 in Wick, Caithness and Isabell Gunn born 1765 in Caithness.

William Bruce's parents (I believe) are Alexander Bruce born 1725 in Caithness and Margaret Sinclair born August 8 1730 in Caithness, as well.

Isabell Gunn's parents (I think) are Robert Gunn and Isabella Elder both born in 1730 in Sutherland (I think).

I would greatly appreciate any information which would confirm the above and or any supplemental information.

Thank you and regards.

Regards,
Suzanne Desormeaux

Scotland / Gunn ancestry
« on: Tuesday 30 July 13 02:35 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to establish correct family information on Robert Sinclair Gunns parents. He was born 1836 Wicks Scotland and married in 1860 a Williamina Campbell Cunningham. She was born in Princes Street, Edinborough Scotland.
I have been given  parentage for Robert as an Alexander Gunn  born 1802 Kildonan, Scotland and died 1881 Kildonan. Would like to be able to obtain a copy of death certificate or know where he was buried. His wife was Isabella Henderson - no more information on her.
Robert immigrated to Australia but am trying to establish further information from Scotland.
Have been told Alexanders parents were a "John Gunn and Barbara McKay" but this has not been proven therefore need to have more information on Alexander and Isabella.
Birth, Wedding, Death certificates or any records would be appreciated.

Also Robert Sinclair married a Williamina Campbell Cunningham in Australia and I was seeking information on her parents also.
Williamina was born May 1836- Princes Street, Edinborough Scotland to William Cunningham and Ann Campbell. Any information on these would also be appreciated.
Thank you

Australia / Census records for 1909, 1914 and 1919 St Arnaud Victoria
« on: Tuesday 30 July 13 02:09 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking the census records for 1909,1914 and 1919 in St Arnaud, Victoria to start to retrieve further information on my GGG Grandparents and their families. Their name was Gunn and the descending families resided in St Arnaud area up until about 1949.
If I can locate these full records it will assist me in who lived in what household and how 3 of the names I have but can`t fit may be able to be linked in as well as following children.
It was the family of Robert Sinclair Gunn and Williamina Campbell (nee Cunningham).
Hope someone can help.
Debbie

Hi,
it seems we have a connection William Gunn married an Isabella Syme( I have been told for years it was henderson so I have been at a stalemate.
Their son Robert Gunn married Wilhelmina Cunningham. He was born 1828. Would love to trade info if this is the right line. They had a son William Alexander Gunn whom married Octavia Vendy.
regards,
Debbie.

:) Hi I am A Gunn descendent and have William Gunn and Isabella(but told she was henderson). They had children Margaret Gunn b. 1826, Robert Sinclair Gunn (my GG Grandfather) b.1828, Georgina Gunn b.1831, John Gunn b.1833, Alexander Gunn b.1835 , and William born 1839. We may be related if I have the right line. My relatives were born in Durness and my GG grandfather migrated to Australia when he was 24 in about 1852 - 1854.
Please get back if you can help me to let me know if Isabella was a Syme and not a Henderson as my Auntie has given me. We have no relatives who have kept records of my ancestry from when my GG Aunt died and all records of our Gunn ancestry were lost. Debbie

Hi Lisa , Deborah,
I too have Gunns in my tree. My ancesters  were born and lived in Durness. My G.G. Grandfather  Alexander b 1834, came from Durness and immigrated out here  to Australia in 1853. His father was Sgt William Gunn - married Isabella Syme. Is there any connection to your families?

I have Isabellas children that match up with all my ancestors names. My Isabella was married to a William Gunn and apparently she was a Henderson. She had Margaret Gunn b 1826, Robert Sinclair b. 1828, Georgina Gunn b.1831 ,John Gunn b.1833, Alexandra Gunn b.1835 and William Gunn b.1839.
This seems to tie in with my ancestry tree can you please fill in the Gap. Did she remarry after William Gunn or how does the Syme family come into the Gunns.

I have her death certificate and it clearly states Captain George Syme RN and Winifred St Leger.  As you say they can be unreliable.
However Isabella did have children that were living in Durness at the time she died and therefore I think a certain amount of the information could quite likely be true.
Isabella's children were John Gunn bp Halkirk 1822, Helen Gunn bp Halkirk 1823, Margaret Gunn bp Halkirk 1825, Robert Gunn bp Halkirk 1828, Georgina Gunn bn Halkirk bp Durness 1830, bd Durness 1924, John Gunn bp Durness 1832 bd Durness 1845, Alexander Gunn bp Durness 1834 bd 1895 Australia, Daniel Gunn bp Durness 1836, bd Durness 1901 and William Gunn bp Durness 1840.
It would be interesting to find out if Commander William Syme RN was a relative to Captain George Syme RN.

;) Hi just came across your thread and I have ancestors margaret Gunn born 1826,Robert Sinclair Gunn born 1828,Georgina Gunn born 1831, John Gunn born 1833, Alexandra Gunn born 1835 and William Gunn born 1839. All these names seem to tie in with the Gunn names you have. I have their parents were William Gunn born 1785 and an Isabella (henderson).
I am hoping you can help me as if I am on the right track with this ancestry. All records have been lost from my Great Grandparents when they passed away and this was given by mY Auntie. I am unsure where the Syme and Isabella had children with the name Gunn.
My GG Grandfather was Robert Sinclair Gunn whom married a Wilhelmina Campbell Cunningham. I am aware that Robert Migrated to Australia in approx 1860. His family lived in Durness.
Am I on the right track or can someone help me as to where to seek my ancestry tree.
