Moray (Elginshire) / Re: Local knowledge Forres

Hi jimr

From a quick google search, it looks as though it might have been in the Pilmuir area of Forres. If you search for Fraser's buildings + Forres (or Pilmuir), several of the search results relate to addresses in Pilmuir.

Wish I could help more.

Hi Monica

Thanks for replying, that’s very useful information. I had no idea that you could search births using both maiden and family names at the Scotland’s People Centre, and although 1927 might be a bit late for Jane and William, it will certainly help with some of my other research :).

You’re also spot on re. informants on death certificates. William’s didn’t yield anything (a nurse signed it). Jane’s did, and led me to a marriage certificate, and then to another ‘brick wall’.  Unfortunately I can’t post about that due to data protection issues etc (<100 years).  I’ll just hope that this thread rings a bell with someone linked to Jane or William.  It’s a long shot, I know.

Hi,

I'm not sure whether to post this under Nairnshire or Morayshire, as it spans both, but I think my best bet may be Nairn  :-\

William McLean was born in 1867 (in Dyke, Morayshire) to parents Donald McLean and Jane (or Margaret Jane) MacBeath. In the early 1900s, William helped his widowed father to run the farm at Wester Hardmuir, Auldearn, Nairnshire. William married Jane Borthwick (from Forres, Morayshire) in 1912 and I think the couple remained at Wester Hardmuir for some time after Donald's death in 1913, certainly until 1914/15. However, from 1920 onwards they appear to have lived in Forres, Morayshire (first in North Road and later Bogton Road).

William had several siblings. These included a younger sister Margaret Jane Mclean (b. 1870) who married Frederick W Iles (from Gloucestershire). She lived in Oxford for several years, but eventually the couple moved back to Auldearn (where she died in 1950).

Despite having tried all the usual sources (Scotland’s People, MLibindx, poor law records, school admission rolls etc.) I’ve reached a brick wall with my current research, and am unsure whether William and Jane had any children. So if anyone reading this has the above individuals in their family tree, I would love to hear from you.

Which parish was it? Was it the Church of Scotland or another denomination? What exactly is the full text of the note on the back of the birth certificate? Which house did the baptism take place in?

I was baptised in my parents' house and the minister wrote this down on the back of my birth certificate. I do not know if there is a matching entry in the church's cradle roll, but the ones I have seen in other churches have usually just listed the parents' names, the child's name and date of baptism.

Thanks Forfarian, that definitely answers my question, and, I think it probably means that I would be gain more from a trip to the Family History Centre in Elgin sometime, to try to look at school enrolment records, than from chasing the baptism record (although knowing me I will end up doing both !)

I do wonder what would have happened if anyone other than the birth mother and father presented the child for baptism  – would it still be the birth parents names that were listed, I guess it probably would???

The Parish was Kinloss, and the minister was GS Peebles –after some internet googling I found some biographical info about him that mentioned presbyteries, so I think (?) that means he was Church of Scotland.

All the note says is Baptised by me at Langot  (which I guess could mean the main house or the farm –neither of which I can link to the family via 1901 or 1911 censuses), the year 1907, and his signature.

I realise that a lot can happen between 1901 and 1911 though, and people often moved around the region to find work etc. My next stop, I think, will be School enrolment records, and maybe Valuation Roles.

One thing I did notice, was that the person living at  Langcot House in 1911 (and according to a Forres Gazette extract also in 1907 –when there was a fire there!!!) Charles Minto Bruce, did seem to do a lot of ‘Community Work’ for lack of a better word, with local schools etc.

Thanks Graham, that's very interesting indeed.

I know who the minister was (and the Parish), but yes I think the baptism was in a house.

The weird thing is that as far as I know (so far) the family had no link to that house. Is it possible that the baptism was at an employers' house, or a relative's house, or just a large house (kind of like people getting married at stately homes these days !  :-\)  or does that just sound too weird/unlikely???

Hi Kim,
Sorry, I've only just seen your reply. Thank you for checking the records. I'm quite new to this, so it's really good  to have a second opinion. I've passed all my research notes on to my Mum's friend (who is a descendent of John Davidson), but I don't think she's had time to look through it all yet.
Anyway, in the notes that I gave to her I've included a reference to your posts on this thread. I'm not sure whether she has internet access, but if she does you may well see her on this forum soon  :)

Thanks Jean Jeanie and portybelle.

I have the birth certificate, but the baptism was (according to a note scribbled on the back of the birth cert.) was 2 years later, and in a different area of Morayshire.

On the 1911 census, the child (who is still at school) is listed as a 'lodger' with a different family (i.e. not her birth parents). Whether this family had her baptised or her mother did, I have no idea -but that is why I'm wondering about details on baptism (as oppose to birth) records.

Hi,
Could any one tell me what type of information, other than the child's name, a 1907 baptism record from the Forres/Kinloss area is likely to contain?

I'm wondering whether it's worth trying to unearth the record (or not)  :-\

Thanks
