Donegal / Daniel Devaney (Devanney)
« on: Monday 27 March 17 23:13 BST (UK)  »
I am still trying to find my husbands G.Grand father's family. I believe now they were from the Townland of Cleenderry in the Parish of Templecrone. His name was Daniel Devanney or Devaney. His father was John Devanney (Devaney) who on Daniels marriage certificate is given as a ships carpenter.
I think Daniel was born c 1850 and his mothers name perhaps Maria. Any help tracing this family would be appreciated.

Hi Derek,Just seen your query re Gearstones. Yes it is an outdoor centre now but it was an inn.
My Great Great grandfather Francis Whaley owned it and when the dynamite incident took place his daughter's father in law Francis Yates, who was also my Great Great Grandfather, was the innkeeper.

Ok will be. May I ask where you found Alexanders birth and the name of his parents. Do you
know where they were from?

Thank you for your information on Alexander. I was beginning to think I
would never know when he was born or who his parents were. You have provided
another piece of the puzzle. Thank you.

Hi Kellie,
Thanks for your reply re the Golden family. I went to the Burnley library last week and found Thomas' marriage in the St Mary's church records and his father is named as Patrick and mother Sarah so I know for sure now he was brother to Sarah Golden who married Daniel Devanney in 1873. Any information you have of the Golden family before that date would be gratefully received.
Kind regards
Rowlf

Hi Daniel, Thanks for your reply to my query regarding Alexander Kirkbride. He and his first wife Agnes did not move from the area but did not have any children. I had found his second marriage at Hardraw to Mary but was not aware it was his second until I visited the Visitors Centre in Hawes where there is a room with lots of records and information on family history. A lady helping there knew of the family and it was she who told me it was his second marriage. She then found me the marriage at Aysgarth to Agnes and Agnes' death and knew there were no children. I would be grateful for any information you have regarding Mary's parents, grandparent etc. I had found James Webster and Dorothy Claughton's marriage but have got no further with that line of enquirey.Alexander's son Bernard was my Paternal Granmother's G.Grandfather.

Thank you. I too thought that might be the name of the town. Trouble is I have no idea which parish to begin to look for a birth. I will have a look at the web site you suggest.

I am eager to trace the birth of Alexander Kirkbride who was married in Aysgarth in 1768 to Agnes
Hodgson. Agnes died in 1786 and Alexander remarried Mary Webster at Hardraw in 1792.

I am trying to trace my husbands G.G.Grandfather, Daniel Devanney . He was married in Burnley,Lancashire in 1873 and in the marriage record of the church where he was married it gives his father's name as John, a ships carpenter and his mothers name was Mary and says ' The groom's family from Clenmenny,Donegal.
I cannot find any place of that name. Daniel was 21 when he married in 1873. I can find him on the 1881 census in England but not on later ones so I wonder if he returned to Ireland.
