Armed Forces / Montgomeryshire Yeomanry 1910-1915
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 15:44 GMT (UK)  »
I want to trace my grandfather's service records with the Welshpool Yeomanry and I have the email address for Y-Lanfar museum which is said to hold the Collection but of course they are closed and my email bounced back.  I just want the dates he was with them as he signed up with the 158th (Howitzer) Reg in Accrington in 1915 and stated he had served for 4 years with the Yeomanry.  Rather than assume the 4 years are 1911 to 1915 I would really like to know for sure how long he had been in Accrington when he joined the 158th.  Does anyone know where else the service records might be found. Thank you

Library and FHS Lookups / Re: Missing birth and marriage records for Hannah Murn

Thank you Maggsie, sorry to be so long.  The birth record for gt.gt.granddad O'Meara is a wonderful addition to the tree as I only had a vague possibility and now we have his birthday! His mum Hannah still remains a mystery though but we can't have everything. Thanks again, Sue

If no one minds me asking this...I have done huge amounts of searching on Find my Past for my Griffiths family and it is almost finished.  As I have said on here before the downloaded gedcom files are no good to me as I can't open them.  Last time a kind member opened it for me but what I would really like is advice on whether there is a simple software program that will let me open my tree and edit it on my pc OR something like a blank template that I can type in all the names, dates, spouses and children in a format similar to a family tree.  I am hopeless at free hand otherwise I would write it all onto a large sheet of paper.  I have looked at "Gramps" but it will be too laborious to start from scratch on that. Hope you can help. Sue

Wales / Re: Registration of Births in Wales

Thank you BumbleB.  Yes it is my family and I have all the Census records for the Griffiths plus the marriage certificate for John and Ann.  I was quite happy with it all and got in touch with Guilsfield Parish Church regarding John's parentage and received details of his baptism in 1808.  Also included in the reply were details of the three baptisms (Mary Ann, Elizabeth Ellen and Lloyd) and they all appear to belong to one set of parents, a John and Ann.  I rejected them because Mary Ann was born before my John and Ann had married in 1844.  What niggled me was that the Lloyd in the group is surely my Lloyd (he died in 1872 age 25) and I didn't find another baptism record.  I keep coming back to the trio and thought maybe Mary Ann was born out of wedlock and that both the girls maybe died before 1851 but I have found no death records.  So you see why I wanted birth certificates for all three to make a comparison.  Thomas Griffiths as on the 1851 Census is also a mystery but I gave up on him.  Such is ancestry research.  Thanks again Sue

Thanks nanny jan, I have just tried GRO as you suggest and no trace for the three births so it seems that the parents failed to register them. Ah well!

Wales / Registration of Births in Wales

Can anyone suggest why I am unable to trace registered births for three of my ancestors born post 1837 and all in the parish of Guilsfield Montgomeryshire.  I use Find my Past and have the Baptism transcripts for all three of the children but the one thing I need to be certain of their identity is their mother's maiden name.  I have their younger brother's birth certificate of 1849 and this gives mother's maiden name plus the full address of the father. They were all baptised at St Aelhaiarn Church Guilsfield and father's residence is shown as Llanerchrochwell.
The children are:  Mary Ann Griffiths  baptised 25 June 1843
Elizabeth Ellen Griffiths  baptised 17 Aug 1845
Lloyd Griffiths  baptised 7 Feb 1847
I want the mother to be Ann, maiden name Davies to be sure they are all one family
There are a few possible traces in F my P birth registrations but I don't really want to order them all from GRO,  Are there any other sites where this information may be visible?  I hope I have posted this in the right place.
Many thanks...Sue

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Alice Whitehead missing from 1841

This is going to be the most likely story.  I have both marriage certificates. There is a baptism record for 1820 in Padiham but dad is a grocer. Perhaps Alice's mum didn't register her birth or didn't survive.Alice has stuck to the same year of birth throughout so I will have to accept it.

Yes that is the 1841 census I am considering but as you have traced the same family in 1851(still in Cliviger but spelt Whithead) I am afraid that eliminates them as my Alice had been married and widowed by 1851 and is seen as Hardman and lodging with the Hurtley family in 1851. Thanks anyway, back to searching!
