The Lighter Side / Saying hello to everyone
« on: Tuesday 10 March 09 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
I've been MIA for a long time, but wanted to drop in and say hello to everyone.

I've been really busy researching and working on my book about my g-uncle - have a rough draft just about done.  But every time I think I'm getting close, more information surfaces that has to be worked in somewhere/somehow.

I've gained a tremendous amount of family history on all of my lines lately.  After years of searching and trying to figure things out, I stumbled onto my paternal grandmother's information that took me from her all the way back to the founding of Quebec.  It also put me related to about 80% of Quebec at the same time!   ;D

Have also followed the STOCKTON dna testing very closely, since there has been argument over whether two Stockton lines were related or not.  The outcome did not affect my genealogy, but it sure affected a lot of others out there.  (I descend from the Richard Stockton line).

We are now one step closer to identifying our missing TEAGUE ancestor, with some new information that has surfaced just recently.  We have only been able to get back to William Swaim Teague, born 1834/5 in Warren County, Tennessee.  No one is able to identify his father as of yet.

On my ROWE/ROE lineage - same thing, but not much new in leads there, either.  We are back to my 2nd g-grandfather Solomon ROWE, born 1818 in Alabama.  There are hints that say his father was John ROWE, but we have yet to find proof of this.

Anyway, just wanted to drop in and say hi to everyone, and hope to get in here more often!

The "Old West" of television fame... well, the way it is portrayed on television is true, and yet not so true.  Kind of depended upon where you lived in the time period.

It really was as rough and tumble as portrayed in many parts of the US.  Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Texas, Montana, North and South Dakota - those areas in particular were indeed pretty rough in the 1800's.

The villians of the time period really did exist, and for the most part were just about as mean as they claim.

The history of the Old West is one of my favorite subjects - I have read and studied it pretty much all of my life.  So when I found actual family in the middle of it, it surprised me, and yet it didn't.

The fun surprise came when I found my mother's side involved.  Mom swore all her life that "her family wasn't like that.  They were always gentlemen and ladies.  They did not try to be outlaws and things."  umm.... okay mom... if you say so..... LOL

Sorry I have been MIA for such a long time.  Taking a quick breather here this morning to say hello to all.

Started working on the book about my g-uncle Bert Quinn's murder, and in the middle of it, received word of another branch of the family who were involved in a shooting/murder situation! LOL

Most recent find now - had a cousin who was a county attorney in Texas.  Apparently he was in the process of defending someone in the beginnings of a trial, and the sheriff did not like either the fact he was defending the man, or the way he was defending him.

We do not have the details yet - still digging for them.  But what we do know so far is - Jeff Teague was defending a man by the last name of Tilliary over a crime committed.  This was in either Longview or Marshall, Texas.

Sheriff Tabler did not like it, so he shot and killed Jeff in July 1886.  Several months later, as this trial continued, Jeff's father and one of his brothers decided to take care of the sheriff.

They set up an ambush outside the sheriff's office and as the man left the hotel dining room, they opened fire, killing him instantly.  This was in  September 1886.

The only other details we have at the moment is that Ludie Teague and his son were both arrested with minor wounds, both posted a $5,000 bond each, and both ended up acquitted for the shooting.

Doggone it!  If my family doesn't quit popping up in history in some kind of melee/shooting/murder/whatever.... I'll NEVER get my family history done! LOL

Hello to all!

Sorry - have been away for a while.  I think that somewhere in my pile of stuff - I have the name of Catherine McSorley.  I know it rings a bell with me.

I am wondering right now if your James Quinn and Catherine were from around the area of Omagh.

I'll dig a little and see what I can come up with.

Hi Christopher -

As a matter of fact, we are fairly sure they originated in the Omagh area.  As near as we can tell from talking with family who still live in Omagh, some of the family migrated down into Donegal (guesstimated time period - 1700-1750)  Then a few of those went "back home" in the early to mid 1800's.

We do have some additional information to add that may help, also.

John Quinn (my g-g-grandfather) was named John Patrick Quinn.  G-g-grandmother was Bridget Nancy Murphy.  The paperwork associated with the family that is here in the States have them listed as John and Bridget.  But everyone in Ireland called them Patrick and Nancy.

Nancy was from the Leghowney area.

Yes - there is a chance that the Patrick you have is most likely mine if he was around Omagh - or from the looks of it anywhere between Omagh and Ballyshannon (LOL)

The Quinns who immigrated to London were of the Eddie Quinn family.

This Edward was from the Ought/Rosilly Bar area of Donegal.

We are most likely talking the same family here.  I can take the line back to about 1700 so far, and we are working on getting it back farther.  We already have some very good leads, thanks to family still living in Ireland today.

Yes, they sure did.  And there are still quite a few there today.  Am in the process of contacting this branch now.

As I understand it, they migrated to the Ealing (? or Easling?) area, and there is still family in this area now.

I have just received a bunch more information on the family and am in the process of getting all the Patrick's, Edwards, James, and John's in right order.

You can email if you'd like - it's a rather large file.
