Northumberland / Re: William Collings, Burial

WOW.

My g.g.g. grandfather was William Colling who was born in Sunderland, a mariner, and died sometime between the 1841 and 1851 census as his wife was remarried by 1851.  I have been having trouble finding details of his death.  I know the timescale doesnt fit this William but what a coincidence.  I did wonder if his ship had sunk and I have lost all hope that I would find any details on him.  I live in Blyth too, and know St. Cuthberts well.

thank you so much Barbara.  The trouble is that the name comes up with Collin, Collings and Colling.  I have not been able to find a marine index in the gro but will have another look as I have access to Ancestry

Can someone help me please?
William was on the 1841 census with his wife Jane. He was 30 and a mariner.  He was transcribed as Collins.  By the 1851 census his wife Jane was remarried with a 5month old baby, plus the children she had with William.

I have searched for Williams death as I know he was deceased by 1854 but I cant find it anywhere.  If he had died at sea would his death not have been registered.  I did find a William Collins death 1849 in Sunderland on the free bmd and when the certificate arrived it was the wrong one.  This one was only 4 years old.

I am pulling my hair out at the mo, does anyone know if there would be a register of the ships he was on.

Would be grateful for any help

Regards Susan

I had a lot of help locating my g.g. grandparents a couple of years ago on this board. Somehow I don't seem to be able to find the record of William Collings death.  He and Jane were on the 1841 census and by the 1851 census she remarried as William had died about 1849 but I cant find out where I got these details from.  If someone could help me I would be grateful.  They lived in sunderland and on the 1841 census he was transcribed as Collin (I think) He was born about 1811
Anyhow he was a seaman and it would be interesting to know if he died at sea and How would I find out which ship he was on.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My g.g.g. grandmother was called Mary Ann Stephenson born 1810, who was a cousin of George Stephenson, although we are having trouble trying to find the exact link. She was born in Warenford Northumberland and married John Kirkup.

I have just found the details of George and Marthas marriage too. Lilian actually married James Barnett in 1913 and on reading the bmd it shows him as marrying a Lily E. I am sure that it is the correct people though. Could it have been a misprint?

yes that is spot on. I have been on the wrong track but yes I was told her name was lilian but convinced myself it was lily. I have not been able to find Lilians birth either. Never mind that has helped a lot.

Thank you
Susan
