Good Morning,
I am not sure if this is any help but I am researching a James Kilpatrick too (abt1821 - 1894), I have a photo of his gravestone in Avoca Cemetery, Victoria, Australia and it states that he was born in Armar (sic), Ireland, which I think must have been Armagh, this is a common spelling mistake in USA records too. He was 73 when he died in 1894. He was a protestant, United Church of England and Ireland, as stated on his marriage certificate, and he married Eliza Cranwill 1845, where it also states that his father was James. The Cranwills were a prominent Dublin family, some members are listed as gentleman farmers, doctors and would you believe a literary dilettente!
See Roots Web Maytree:

So a few coincidences although not exact birth date, but very near....
They then emigrated to Australia after 1851 but before 1856 and settled in the Goldfields area of Avoca. Gold was discovered in large quantities in about 1850 -60 and James is listed as a Digger with the Avoca Historical Society. I am his Great Great Grand daughter. I am still searching for the ship they emigrated on....
They had eight children before an epidemic descended on Avoca in 1864 and six of their eight children died in the space of three weeks in what can be only described as an absolute tragedy. Only Elizabeth and Agnes Amelia (my G Grandmother) survived. I have a photo of the grave, if you are interested and send me your email I could send it to you.
Alternatively you could contact the Avoca Cemetery who are happy to email photos of the gravestones and might have more information. I would love to hear more.
